Philly Conference

Recommended Posts

My DH who usually likes to goad me has been quite sympathetic. This on top of crushing my thumb just might send me over the edge......

At least the boys' quarterly reports are nearly finished......

Even soccer is canceled tomorrow so not even that to make my mind off the canceled convention.....

Totally. I might have to go to his forum and beg.

Angela, you should seriously do it. The address on the RFWP site is showing them in Unionville, NY. It couldn't hurt to find out what it would take to get him here or Philly, right? I mean, the answer might be "an audience of 12,000" or it might be, "What the hey--pay for my expenses and buy me lunch."

Really? Seriously? Do it! Do it! Dennis is a hero!!

And I would offer something...I don't know what...ummm...something...to get Michael Clay Thompson to come around here. I have to teach high school next fall, and I NEED THAT MAN!!!

Seriously.

I didn't really need to buy anything at the conference. I just wanted to see SWB and MCT speak. Wasn't really all that interested in the other speakers even (although I might've snuck in to see Andrew Kern and Zacarro, but if Uhura can bring along her copy of LToW, that would go a long way to putting a band-aid on that :tongue_smilie:)

I need this conference this year. This has also been a really tough homeschooling year for me, and next year might be my last year homeschooling my older two (high school) - I need inspiration/support/kick in the pants now. :(

Seriously, I would come down there for just MCT and SWB. And we could all have a big party at the hotel. :D And we could all bring our curriculum along and show it to each other in lieu of the exhibit hall - I mean among us, we've got to have just about everything. :tongue_smilie:

I would so love it if we could still all get together that same week. I'll bring CPO science and K12 Human Odyssey :D

Could we meet at an Embassy Suites or similar place? That way we could sleep multiple people per room, eat the really nice breakfast buffet, enjoy the manager's reception (drinks and snacks) in the evening, and perhaps pay for the use of a conference room.

I Googled a bit, and it seems they just got approval to turn the Convention Center into a casino. Perhaps they are closing to get started on the conversion.

Pa. high court OKs King of Prussia casino

Ugh, don't even get me started on the dang casino issue!!!

Have they considered moving it just a wee bit outside the city...like to the Lancaster Convention Center??? *hint, hint*

I was bringing LTOW - the 4th edition! Actually, it's Kalmia's so I should say We were bringing it.

Seriously, if we can get MCT and SWB to meet us in Philly, I'll be there!!! Let's start a thread at the MCT yahoo group if someone hasn't already.

Please, please, please only suggest the same dates! I'm being selfish--the other weekends in June are full with high-school-graduation-related events.

SWB and MCT were the only speakers that interested me. If we can also recreate a "vendors' hall" by bringing various curricula and books, I'd be over the moon.

Well, we know we're all free that weekend (and so are the speakers) - a lot of people have already booked their rooms - yes, let's stick to the same dates.

Maybe we could get one conference room at the hotel, have MCT to come up for one day and give talks in it, SWB to come up for a second day and give talks in it, and on the third day lay out whatever curriculum we've all brought around the room and browse. If we could get the hotel to continue offering the discounted rate - I'm sure they'd rather do that than give us all refunds.

I just hope if that happens I can still get my friends to come - I was counting on sharing the hotel room and gas/driving.

Ok, I didn't see a thread at the MCT forum so I posted a message asking him if he would consider it. Has anyone sent a message to SWB?

Can we have a show of hands of exactly how many would go for the exact same dates as the conference. Please post only once. Use this :auto: smiley and I will count only posts with that in so that there isn't any confusion w/ other discussion.

I gave MCT the link to this thread so he can see how many are interested.

Is it worth looking into other, possibly cheaper hotels? I have a $98 room at the Marriott just a mile or two away from the convention center. I could maybe call them and see what their rates are on meeting rooms. Or does most everyone want to stick with the Radisson?

I kind of like the idea of having everyone in one place - and aren't a lot of people already booked? Although I can't afford it anyway if I can't share a room - and if I am sharing the price difference won't be that much for me. I've been postponing telling my friends this has hit the fan - I'm really hoping it can re-gel in a way that they can still get excited about coming. I know they were also really mostly interested in MCT and SWB - and a weekend away from the kids. :tongue_smilie:

Well, with this new kerf/l/uffle, I had decided to put the money ds and I would have spent toward a different trip. However, I *might* be able to swing it for myself if I had a roommate. I have to be upfront and call myself out as a relapsed smoker though, and I know that can be difficult for others even when a hotel room is "smoke-free".

We just finished at the Cincy convention. We broke an all-time sales record; it was great!

Anyway, there was a vendor meeting Thursday night. According to the organizers, the Philly convention center is closing (as in ceasing to operate). There was a clause in the contract that allowed them to do so even with the convention already booked.

Brennan said they've found a place to do it about 20 minutes up the road, but it's not available in 2011. He's already booked it for 2012, though.

All vendors and registrants will get refunds. My understanding is that the event will not happen at all this summer, but is on for 2012.

The situation has NOTHING to do with the kerfluffle. It has to do with the convention hall closing down.

We're disappointed, too!

:eek:No!

:crying::crying:I was so looking forward to going.:crying::crying:

I got to talk to the owner of Royal Fireworks Press quite a bit this weekend. What a lovely gracious man...and I think he'd probably be up for some sort of alternative. You should definitely get in touch with them.

SWB

OH SWB! Your post was at the end of the page and I missed it. I have posted a note to MCT at his message board and will email Dr. K. Would you be up to joining us? I know you have a family member ill but we would so love to see you for just one day.

Well, just checked that web site. No SWB. Oh, well ... I take back the suggestion. (Otherwise, still a great conference.)

Yeah, why aren't they going to be there??? Last year they were not invited to speak, but they had a booth and they had their own workshops across the street that a lot of people attended. Half the reason I go to HEAV is to buy my WTM materials for the year, and this year they won't be there. I would love to know why...

I have news! Rachel from RFWP said that they have seen our thread and are very touched by our enthusiasm. Dr. Kemnitz, owner of RFWP which publishes MCTLA, will be contacting me to discuss what can be done!!! But there is the possibility, according to Rachel, that this might happen!!!!
