Philly Conference

Oh NO!!!! I'm just seeing this now! I planned my early summer around it as well. I think I'm going to start crying :(

Me too. I really really really want to see books and meet fellow WTMers.

Where on earth could they find convention space this close to the date?

We just finished at the Cincy convention. We broke an all-time sales record; it was great!

Anyway, there was a vendor meeting Thursday night. According to the organizers, the Philly convention center is closing (as in ceasing to operate). There was a clause in the contract that allowed them to do so even with the convention already booked.

Brennan said they've found a place to do it about 20 minutes up the road, but it's not available in 2011. He's already booked it for 2012, though.

All vendors and registrants will get refunds. My understanding is that the event will not happen at all this summer, but is on for 2012.

The situation has NOTHING to do with the kerfluffle. It has to do with the convention hall closing down.

We're disappointed, too!

Though the Tigger in me is hoping the guy Capt Uhura spoke with was right, and there's just a change of venue...

Completely off topic.

I had to read this sentence a couple times before my brain worked correctly. It's been a rough day and all I could see in my head were Disney characters on the Enterprise.

I need to go to bed.

Yea! Good to hear vendors are doing well at the conventions.

Well, if you knew MY brain, you'd be relieved to know that is not an unlikely scenario. :D

Okay, y'all. So if that's the word--let's do our own. Same weekend, no? Who's in?? Who's in the PHL area to help organize? Let's do it!!!! Count me in for the planning team. I promise not to bake cookies.

I can't even express how disappointed I am. I've been looking forward to this convention since last year when I read the great reviews of the Cincinnati conference and thought I might be able to go there in 2011. I think I may have to take to bed early tonight :( I really, REALLY wish we could have known sooner. I literally would have dropped everything and gone straight to Cincinnati instead.

Erin, thank you so much for posting this. It's a huge relief to know that it's not kerfluffle-related. It's the only thing that makes me happy about the news! It's also a huge relief not to have to wait until Monday to find out. I really appreciate you sharing your inside info with us.

It's really such a shame. GHC has spent thousands on advertising they can't recoup. We'll get refunds, but they'll only get their money back from the venue. The ad dollars are gone in the wind, though.

 I didn't think about that...No possibility for somewhere else at another time this year?

Bummer. Well, I guess I don't need to try and decide about a road trip from Canada anymore. I was looking forward to seeing CleoQc again, and meeting Capt_Uhura and MommyFaithe and all the rest of you if we had a meet-up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :grouphug:

A casino? Oy vey! I'm very disappointed. We have to do something, don't you think? I really needed this conference. I had high hopes. I was looking forward to everything--the long trair ride with a good book, meeting my roommies, hearing Zacarro, SWB, Circe, et al. Using the hotel gym, eating a buffet breakfast alone (or even better with other interesting people who can get their own plates!), seeing all the books and materials, having late night powwows with experienced homeschoolers, taking SWB with other WTMers out for some fun, taking the train home to my beauties, letting my DH take complete charge of the circus for three days (which he would be great at at and love). Darn it! Really!

I'm really sorry for all of you!

I live toooo far away to be affected by this, I just wanted to tell Capt Uhura that I hope your thumb heals QUICKLY! That sounds awful.

Thanks MSPolly....honestly, it hurts really badly. How can such a small appendage hurt so badly? And I'm typing the boys quarterly report so that's not helping. But the advil is kicking in! Better living through chemistry!

Are folks sure the event is canceled, rather than perhaps relocated? (Not sure if that was clear in the thread above...) I would hate to have folks assume the worst if the convention people can scramble and pull it together. There are a ton of hotels and such in the area; for example we were at the Philly Convention Center last weekend and it was both huge and fairly empty, not to mention easier to get to from the airport, *and* right across the street from a Most Amazing farmer's market.

My understanding is it is "relocated" to another venue next year...So it is cancelled for this year...

According to Brennan Dean (the guy behind GHC), it's cancelled. He said he was unable to relocate this year. He did say that next year's venue has already been reserved, though. It's on in 2012. He said the next location is "just 20 minutes up the road."

Oh no! :(

I really wish I would have gone to Cincy. DH and I couldn't decide which one to go to, and I thought it would be easier to get away in June. We had a whole week planned around it. :( If I had only known a week ago, I would have gone to Ohio.

This is so, so disappointing. Now I have to break the news to DH. I hope he can change his business meetings he had arranged in Philly. Ugh.

I would have gone to Cinncy as well. I'm just devastated. It was something I was really looking forward to after having a rough year HSing, I figured it would rejuvenate me. I was so looking forward to hearing SWB, MCT, Zaccaro, Andrew Kern talk as well as check out curricula. And spend 3 days w/ my best buds and get to meet some fellow WTMers. And it's the first time I would be w/out my all 3 of my kids in 11 years.

sad but true....it was the one thing I was really looking forward to....

Just throwing this out there, but what about HEAV? It's in Richmond in early June. Great convention. Lots of speakers, vendors, and workshops. Just something to consider ...

Well, just checked that web site. No SWB. Oh, well ... I take back the suggestion. (Otherwise, still a great conference.)

I know exactly how you feel. I was very excited to hear SWB, MCT, etc...and to look through books in person. I had a list of things that I specifically wanted to see...and possibly buy. I couldn't get away by myself, so we decided to make a family trip out of it, and DH would have fun with the kids while I went to the conference. He has had a lot of business travel lately, and this was my chance to get out of town and do something that I really wanted to do. And then he arranged some business meetings to help finance the trip. :) It was all working out perfectly. This is just SO my luck. When I finally make some plans to do something for me, it doesn't happen. :(

I wish I could! We really don't have the space. Maybe Melissa will do it. We should start working on her!

Maybe if I start cleaning now, I could do it by June :D We don't really have the space for more than 10-12 people either--at least, not all in the same room together. Honestly though, I think Rivka posted a great idea on another thread, about booking the cheapest party room/suite that we can somewhere and doing it there. Someone must know someone who has access to a community room. Oooohhh, wait! I just had a lightbulb moment--DH might be able to get us a room in one of his company's developments. I'll be right back!

Why don't we all just book rooms in a Philadelphia hotel and get a conference room? We can meet workshop-style, and still get the breakfast buffet. We could invite a couple of speakers and vendors. It would be similar to the do-it yourself conferences we've been gabbing about, but sooner and with a couple of speakers. We know people don't have anything booked for those June days yet! We could call it a homeschool convergence.

 Ang, you made Dennis get out the tape measure and start moving furniture around! All I had to do was mention having something here, and he was on it. He thinks we could fit 25 or so people, with folding chairs in the living room/dining room, plus couch etc. He has deemed the downstairs schoolroom the "exhibitor hall" and pointed out that if we do something in the late spring/summer, we could also use the backyard (which is big and shady). So maybe we could...I'll stick in a pin in that. There's also a tiny li'l church around the corner from us (you probably pass it on the way to CW's house) that has a little hall they rent out, and there's the Italian-American club too.

I do like yellowperch's idea of still doing something in Philly though, and I'd be willing to put up some money for that (as in, more than the $25 I spent on registration)--as long as someone is willing to bring Dynamic Literacy materials for me to look at!

Really? Seriously? Do it! Do it! Dennis is a hero!!

And I would offer something...I don't know what...ummm...something...to get Michael Clay Thompson to come around here. I have to teach high school next fall, and I NEED THAT MAN!!!

Me too. Dennis has been comforting me all night, and not even mocking me a tiny bit for being so distraught about a conference.
