Microsoft Mathematics (cross post)

Amazing and, apparently, free.

I say "apparently" free because this is not how we got ours. But it looks free to me.

 

You can put in any complex algebra problem, and it will walk you through the steps like a solutions manual. We have had many uses for it already in pre-algebra, and it looks like it will be useful all the way through college math and science. (!!)

 

Of course your kid could use this INSTEAD of understanding his homework. But assuming your kid has enough character (or parental supervision) to use this only when he is stuck -- and in our house, which has no real math teacher, that happens pretty frequently -- it is a tremendous aid in understanding math problems.
