workingmom
DS 4th grade had recently taken an interest in writing fiction (small) chapter books. The first one he did he wanted to get it published but because it was only a few typed pages we took it to kinkos bound it and gave it to friends and family. I'm wondering if there are fiction writing contests for kids this age that would publish in their magazines etc? Any suggestions?

MelissaMom
I came across a list a while back and my girls that age loved looking for contests to enter. Not on that computer right now, but if you send me a PM I'll find it for you. (I'll forget otherwise :tongue_smilie:because I get that way...kinda spacey!) Mrs Twain
My kids are not old enough for writing contests yet so I don't have a lot of info, and I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but HSLDA holds annual essay and poetry contests. www.hslda.org

5Wizards
You might also like to check out your local bookstores. One of ours has an annual writing contest divided into 3 age groups. The 1st-3rd place winners in each age group have their pieces published in book, and there's an awards ceremony as well. Another option, although it wouldn't include publishing, would be County Fairs. HTH
Jean in CA
This resource looks great. There's a new a short story contest open for preK-12 grade students, homeschoolers included. Your ds could enter the 3rd-6th grade category. Entries are due May 31, 2011. No entry fee. It sounds fun... we are getting to work! Young Voices Foundation I like that they have writers who will mentor your child and answer questions!
