Guest
I am trying to decide what to do. After receiving McRuffy and looking at its progession in later grades, I decided it isn't what I want. I have set the goal of staying more WTMish and not jumping around with my younger set. To that end, what should I do for phonics? Mine like workbooks. I was thinking OPGTR with ETC and Bob Books. I have never seen MCP Plaid Phonics books. Here is my big disclaimer: I have tried using OPGTR with the older 6yr old. He can read every page I put in front of him with no direction from me. But he wiggles around, runs away, whines about it. Any ideas on dealing with this? He is my first to teach to read. He loves the workbooks and Bob. Should I drop OPGTR and focus on those instead? The younger just flat refuses. But he, too, likes the workbooks and Bob. Any ideas?
ElizabethB
White board. Everything is more fun on the white board. My concentration game. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Phonics/concentrationgam.html Also, it does not follow the OPG progression, but I really like the School Phonics workbooks. They also have better stories than most phonics programs, you can make a much better sentence and story when you start with long vowels. All you need are the workbooks, it's not rocket science if you have looked at the instructions in another phonics book. Basically, sound things out from L to R. (School Phonics Students books 1 and 2. They have samples.) boscopup
OPG is way more fun on a white board. How old is the younger one? Resisting in the preK years usually means they're not ready for formal school. You can sneak in learning, but it may have to be really fun and not look like learning. My oldest resisted reading instruction at 4, but I still let him play starfall.com. He learned to read as soon as I backed off and let him learn on his own. Now at 6, he's relatively easy to teach. I did have to go back for phonics, but he's getting that via AAS.
Guest
Mine are 6 and 5 year old boys. We LOVE starfall.com. They both began playing around on it when they were 3 and 2. Love it! I forgot about the white board. I'll pull it out again. Thank you! Edited March 6, 2011 by Guest
