Unicorn.
It made me so sad. In case you missed it, the 2nd place finisher, "Eight Bells", broke both of her front ankles and had to be put down. I feel just awful for her and her owners/trainer/jockey.
Cindyg
Well, I didn't see it, but I know what happened. Just horrifying. So sad.
Tammy
It seems like that is happening more often now.....do you think so? How common is that?
Mesa
What a tragic end... I think it just goes to show these horses are too young to be raced so hard. They really need to let Throughbreds and Quarter horses mature more before they are ridden so hard.

I don't know the stats, but I had the same thought today. Like maybe it's time to evaluate the track?
Mesa
They thought using synthetic dirt would help with the horses breaking down. I dont know if that proved to be true or not. The Kentucky Derby is still "real" dirt.
Unicorn.
Interesting, I've never heard of synthetic dirt. Today was just surreal. Dh and I kept watching the replays to see if we could tell when she might have been injured, but it must have been after the finish. Which of course, by then, all camera's were focused on Big Brown. Mesa
They showed a view from the blimp or something... it was after the race as the jockey was trying to pull her up. She looked as if she just collapsed. Poor girl.....

That's the first thing I said to dh when the tv announcer relayed that Eight Belles, that lovely, valiant filly, was lying on the track. My first thought was it must have been some catastrophic event like a stroke or massive heart attack because racehorses don't just lie down. What a tragic end-- those bodies are WAAAY too young to have those kinds of massive stresses placed upon them. Astrid
Unicorn.
Thanks for posting the article. Dh and I never saw the blimp shot. We kept asking each other "how come they arent' showing the horse that's down?" I think the network dropped the ball on the coverage, like they didn't care. It's just sad. Kathy in MD
Here's an interesting article...http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/05/is_horse_racing_breeding_itsel.html I agree that the breeders are breeding ever more delicate horses. However the horses today are raced far more lightly than the horses 50-70 years ago. Today a top horse may race in it's lifetime far fewer times than earlier horses raced in one season. LadyR
I'm probably PMS'ing because my eyes are still swollen from crying over this tragedy. I'm really angry and sad.
