High School Plan

Recommended Posts

We're planning the last two years of high school. We have some questions.

1. My high schooler needs to work on writing. Considering IEW. Do I add it or replace something with IEW?

2. Can Algebra II be completed before Geometry?

3. Does Chemistry need to be done before Marine Biology?

4. Need to add two years of Spanish. What curriculum do you or don't you suggest?

5. Any other input?

P.S. I'm fine with using Notgrass as is, adding some lit guides.

Thank you for your help!

We're planning the last two years of high school. We have some questions.

1. My high schooler needs to work on writing. Considering IEW. Do I add it or replace something with IEW? Sorry, I have don't know about IEW at all to help you.

2. Can Algebra II be completed before Geometry? Yes you can. This is what my twins have done.

3. Does Chemistry need to be done before Marine Biology? I don't know what Marine Biology covers in detail.

4. Need to add two years of Spanish. What curriculum do you or don't you suggest? Sorry, no clue. Might check out local colleges for this or something on-line.

5. Any other input?

P.S. I'm fine with using Notgrass as is, adding some lit guides.

Thank you for your help!

Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

I really like IEW. Windows to the World is a great literature analysis program. I like the lesson plans that Jill Pike wrote for it that spread it out over a full schoolyear. It is better with a group than with just one student though.

2. Can Algebra II be completed before Geometry?

Yes it can, but it would be better to do them at the same time or do geometry first.

3. Does Chemistry need to be done before Marine Biology?

I have no idea.

4. Need to add two years of Spanish. What curriculum do you or don't you suggest?

Rosetta Stone and Tell Me More didn't work here. I do like Visual Link Spanish.

Hi Meredith,

I'll give it a try, though I'm not confident I can add much.

1. I'm not a fan of IEW unless you see a specific need that IEW could meet. I do agree that writing should be a major goal in high school. There are a lot of directions you could go with that, but I'd base it on your student's needs or the program you're using, if it works well together. The biggest asset will just be writing and having one-on-one feedback, consistently.

2. Yes.

3. Don't know. Chemistry is a good foundation for biology but not really required. I've never seen a Marine biology course.

4. My son is enjoying & working hard at Rosetta Stone with the MFW lesson plans for his first year of French.

5. Other input would be based on your child's needs and goals. If he wants to head straight into college after high school, it might be helpful to use at least one heavy textbook with small print and dense language, whether it's in history, science, math, etc.

We're planning the last two years of high school.

2. Can Algebra II be completed before Geometry?

...

10th grade (current)

Math: Key to Algebra

11th grade

Math: Key to Geometry or an old school geometry text

12th grade

Math: Algebra II

I'll just speak to your math plans. Yes, Algebra 2 can be competed before Geometry. One curriculum that follows that plan is Life of Fred.

I see that you are using Key to Algebra now for Algebra 1. Be aware that the Keys to program is not necessarily a complete Algebra 1 course, and your son may be ill prepared for Algebra 2 in 12th grade. Likewise, Key to Geometry is not a typical Geometry program and many would not consider it worth a full credit for Geometry.

Best wishes with your planning.

Regards,

Kareni
