Rosetta Stone - how many times per week?

Recommended Posts

We have an opportunity to use RS free at our library for up to 2 hours per day. I am wondering how many days per week are recommended for working with RS Level 1 (french). If this is a program that requires daily use, then it would not be cost effective to drive across town that often (with current gas prices).

Thanks for your input!

My son does it 4-5 times a week. From my own experience and my kids', I'm just used to thinking that foreign language must be done every day in order to "work."

However, you don't necessarily have to do the same thing every day. My ds does the Rosetta CD some days and watches French In Action videos some days (basically this kind of variety is in the MFW lesson plans, which we use). My dd had even more variety in her week when doing French -- but still did it almost daily.

Julie, my thoughts were that we would definitely need to supplement with other things. Good to hear that this is what your children do with MFW. I'm looking into what else we might use from the library as a supplement. Also, it looks like lessons can be printed from the software program? I'll be checking with the library on that - and seeing if they allow this. If this is an option, ds could work on printed lesson at home.

My ds doesn't do the RS printed lessons. MFW found that they didn't correlate or help with the program enough to be worth it. We did look up one grammar issue when ds felt confused (something about all those articles).

My older dd used a simple, inexpensive workbook from Barron's (used to be called The Easy Way but I think now it's called E-Z). This was for French but I think they have several languages. A French teacher told me it covers almost 3 years of grammar. We will probably use some of this for my son's year 2, like I did for dd. So that's another option.

A CD program my dd used from the library was Pimsleur. Also, children's books on tapes & movies that can be played in the language, etc.
