OMG I almost burnt the house down!!!

Recommended Posts

Our power went out while I was cooking dinner. I waited about half an hour or so in the dark, but when it didn't come back on I left and met dh at a local restaurant to eat. The baby is afraid of the dark and was crying, ds11 was all hyper from the excitement and driving me nuts, we had nothing to eat, I was trying to change a diaper in the dark, etc and managed to make it out the door without totally losing my mind. It wasn't until we finished dinner that I remembered I hadn't turned the stove off!!!!!! I had a pot of potatoes boiling, but when the power went off of course it stopped boiling. we rushed home to find a house full of smoke and the pot had actually partially melted!!!! I have a saucer sized hunk of metal that had melted off the pot and pooled in the bottom of the burner! We opened the windows and door, and put a fan in the back door blowing air out, but the house still smells. I febrezed one of the couches to see if it helps by tomorrow. Ugh.

My dh probably wants to kill me but isn't saying anything. I'm soooo thankful the house and pets were ok, but terrified of what could have happened, and worried I won't be able to get the smell out of the house. We can't afford a specialist to come in and do it.

Thanking God everything was ok, and reminding everyone to turn off any burners/oven if the power goes off!

Oh, you poor thing!:grouphug::grouphug: God was obviously looking out for you.

I'm sure you aren't the only one who has done something like that. When I think of the times we've left the coffee pot on after it's already been emptied, and then left the house.

By tomorrow morning, you will probably have a bunch of similar stories on here.:001_smile:

Way back before we had kids, I had grease heating on the stove for frying dinner. Dh and his brother were putting together a new vacuum or fixing the old one (I forget) with the assistance of BIL's 2yo son. I came to the living room door to supervise and forgot the oil. BIL asks "What is that smell?" I looked and could see orange in the kitchen, grabbed 2yo nephew and went out the front door, leaving dh and BIL in the house. Walked around to back door in time to see dh throw burnt pan onto the grass. The fire had stayed contained in the pan, but had been hot enough that it melted the blinds across the room, singed several ceiling tiles, and left soot damage on the wall. We covered up the damage as best we could and figured on forfeiting the damage deposit when we moved. The landlord gave it back to us telling us we had left the place in the best shape of any of the former tenants.

I am thankful you are safe. I once had a stove fire because a very chatty, not too put together woman from church called and wouldn't let me off the phone - seriously, this woman is ill and cannot take the hint. I was trying so hard not to offend her and eventually forgot the bacon. Ds tried to interupt me twice and I finally heard him say, MOM FIIIIIIIIRRRRREEE!!! I hung up the phone and quickly put out the fire.

Happy you are all okay,

Faith

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but a similar thing happened to my Mom when I was young and we had to move out of our house for about a week and have things professionally cleaned up. All of our clothes and everything had to be sent out for professional cleaning. If you have homeowner/renters insurance, you can make a claim.

We used to have a little metal "kiss" - it was all that was left of our teakettle that melted.

For the smoke, fans, Febreze, wash walls etc. with a water/vinegar solution, shampoo carpets and upholstery if needed. . . You may have to do more or less depending on how far the smoke got into things.

Yup... I did something similar many years ago. I cleaned up everything myself, no professional help. It took several days of really airing the house and doing laundry/cleaning, but after a while you wouldn't have known.

Thanks, that is hopeful. I have the large kitchen window open, the front screen door, and some smaller windows. I have a big fan blowing out the kitchen window. I have a bowl of vinegar on the counter, as someone said that helps. I washed down all the cabinets in the kitchen, an febreezed the couches. I'm going to take the cushions outside later...right now it looks like rain.

No carpet, so that is good. I will mop in a bit.

thanks!

I'm glad it wasn't worse. I bet your dh isn't saying anything because he knows it could have happened to him too. I'm sure I wouldn't have thought about turning the stove off.

Actually, he would remember to turn it off. He's really really really careful with stuff like that.....generally he's over cautious. His degree is in security, so he is always paranoid. So yeah, that's the worst part. I know he wouldn't do something like this.
