pgr
Do you have a favorite dictionary for the elementary ages? I'm looking for something with substance, not just cute and kiddie; something age appropriate that's also a real reference book they can use. I've looked at various reviews on Amazon - I'm wondering if anyone here can weigh in.:)
tennismomkelly
Funny that you should ask about dictionaries! I was researching them last week. :001_smile: I ordered this one from Amazon yesterday. I haven't seen it yet so I can't comment on it but the price was right. We have the M-W Primary Dictionary by Ruth Heller but it's written for ages 5-8. I hoping that the Intermediate one will be a good choice. yucabird
I like this illustrated one: http://www.amazon.com/Macmillan-Dictionary-Children-Simon-Schuster/dp/1416939598/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297809067&sr=8-1 The reference section includes flags from the US and countries of the world. MissKNG
Without a doubt: http://www.amazon.com/Merriam-Webster-Garfield-Dictionary-Jim-Davis/dp/0877796262/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297810183&sr=8-1 It's a regular dictionary with comics throughout. And the comics use a word that is on that page.
pgr
This is exactly the problem I'm having - these all look good! Thank you for sharing - this helps narrow it down a little!
Satori
My DD6 is using one of these every day, so I'm happy with them. She pulls them out constantly, so I ended up getting two children's dictionaries for the house. American Heritage Student Dictionary (22 great reviews) Merriam-Webseter Children's Dictionary (82 great reviews)
Upstatemamma
I now want all of those. :)
skueppers
Merriam-Webseter Children's Dictionary (82 great reviews) I got an older copy of this one at a library book sale for $1. It's really nice.
Violet Crown
I got an old (1940) college dictionary of conveniently small size: 9" x 7" x 2". Unlike more modern "real" dictionaries, there's not so much information between each word entry and the definition, which makes it easier for a child to see right away what's definition instead of being confused by etymology and word variants, and the type size is a little larger. We had a couple of student/children's dictionaries that grandparents had bought, but they never seemed to have the words that my kids wanted to look up. At $0, the price was right.
