I did that with an amazingly ugly (think neon!) quilt that was very warm and it now is on the bed in my guest bedroom. It works just fine. BTW - I pin my quilts to the duvet cover using large diaper pins. This keeps them from wandering off and bunching up at the bottom of the bed inside the cover.
