Onceuponatime
My son works at an Italian restaurant and he brought some of this home with him. The owner made it and it is not on the menu. It has clear broth with penne pasta, baby limas, LOTS of garlic, and something green which I think is broccoli, chopped very fine or pureed. Yum. I need a name. My son doesn't go back to work till next Thursday.

ereks mom
Pasta e fagioli? Usually has sausage but could be? I've only had pasta e fagioli at Olive Garden (it's my favorite of their soups), but it doesn't have clear broth. It's kind of a cross between vegetable beef soup (has vegetables) and chili (has beans).

Mama Geek
Wedding soup is made with spinach not brocolli and uses aborio rice not penne pasta. Did it have meatballs in it?
Dawn in OH
Does this look like what you had? Italian Broccoli Soup with Pasta 1 large bunch broccoli 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 large cloves garlic sliced thin dried red pepper flakes, to taste 2 cups chicken broth 2/3 cup tiny soup pasta Salt and pepper Parmesan reggiano to taste
kalanamak
I suspect it is an Americanization of a fava and chicory soup, or some other "bitter" green. Sounds wonderful.
Teachin'Mine
Is it possible the baby limas were cannolini beans? You can add pasta to this soup - it's delicious either way! :) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/escarole-and-bean-soup-recipe/index.html
