HomeOnTheRanch
Sorry, just need a place to vent... I had my 2nd pre-natal appt. this afternoon. I feel like I already know everything I need to know. Everything is fine and healthy, and the only reason I agreed to go was to humor DH re: my Hashimoto's. I was absolutely bored silly during the first appt. when the dr. told me everything that she needs to tell all newly pregnant women. BTDT. Nope, I didn't want to pay $10 for their book when I already have a shelf full of pregnancy books at home. Ho-hum. So, today I actually had questions for the midwife regarding my hashimoto's and the fibroids that were discovered during the u/s last time. I got the feeling that I actually knew more about what I was asking than she did (I've researched on net, but still had some questions). She left to go ask the dr. and when she came back the answers didn't jive at all with what I already knew. I came home and did more research and I think that she was confused. I don't know. It wasn't really a big deal, but I feel like going to my ob appts will just be a waste of time and money. Oh, and they aren't even going to bother checking my thyroid levels again until 28 weeks unless I start having symptoms. So much for my whole reason for going to the doctor. I will say that the midwife is really nice. She's fun to talk to and it almost makes up for the frustration over the fact that I know more about me & pregnancy than they do. I've had four completely different births in different places--hospital birth with midwife, hospital birth with doctor, unassisted homebirth with DH, hospital water birth with DH (doctor and midwife looking on). This one will either be a home water birth with DH or a hospital water birth with DH. Currently the hospital doesn't do water births and the doc said she wasn't interested in doing one, but that DH was free to deliver in the hospital if he wanted to (she didn't specifically say that DH could do a hospital water birth, but I didn't ask for clarification:lol:). There is a tub that they use for laboring women, but it is down the hall, around the corner (over the hill & through the woods) from L&D. I really want to bring in my own wading pool to the labor room. All the nurses are gung-ho about starting water births, but the 2 docs don't want to. Sue G in PA
The reason I don't use an OB anymore. :D I will certainly never profess to knowing more than my midwife but I frequently think I know more than many OB's. My mdwife has probably delivered more babies than most OB's twice her age, in a plethora of different circumstances, water births, breech birth, twin and triplet births, etc. SHe's done it all (except surgery!). I find that most dr.'s love to tell you what they know (which isn't everything) but hardly listen. As to your thyroid levels being checked at 28 wks...I'd question. I had mine checked monthly during the first trimester, twice in the second trimester and I'll have it checked after the birth. I would have had more, but we switched insurances and I haven't found a new primary care yet. :glare: Pregnancy can really wreak havoc with your thyroid, esp. early on. It's always best to stay on top of it, KWIM? I'm not a know-it-all...but I sure hate dr.'s who are. At least I admit that I have a lot to learn! fruitful vine
I went to my OB for a regular check-up. They found a lump on my left ovaries. They wanted to check it again and the Doc was checking my right side. He sent me up for a Sonogram and they found it on my left side. I went back for a Doc visit again and he was looking on my right side. At that point they wanted to schedule an operation to cut me open and see what it is. So I asked which side they were going to cut. He said "The right, why do you asked?" I told him that I was confused as to what side it was on since they had check a different side each time. So, He looked at my chart and figured out it was moving...... "Oh he said it a functional cyst, you're fine, go home.":001_huh: All that running because they didn't realize that it was moving!!!! Grrrr..... Well, I am glad it was nothing, but watch the doctors....They are human, too!
