Does this ring a bell with anyone:confused: There are all kinds of applications you can put on your facebook. There are snowglobes to swap, things to throw at each other, drinks to pass, all kinds of stuff. I have the map that shows al the cities you have visited and the virtual bookshelf. You can allow or disallow whichever ones you wish. Quote

Mrs Mungo Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 So you're saying that they are safe? Oh yes, they are generally safe. They're not going to allow spyware on your computer or anything like that. Quote
Jenny in Atl Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 someone added something to my Facebook thingie, something about "heroes ability"?? But I have to allow it? Does this ring a bell with anyone:confused: It's from the T.V. show Heroes. Each person on the show is a super hero, like superman (can fly) or can read minds. Like a live action cartoon. You don't have to add any of the applications. Folks just send them to have fun and do silly activities together, like pillow fights. Quote
C_l_e_0..Q_c Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 They may or may not be safe. They will NOT install viruses on your computer. They could possibly sell information on you (like which cake you prefer)... Not many will actually do that, but you could consider them as a breach of your personal space. I tend to allow them to see whatever the person sent me, and then I block the application. I sleep better at night that way ;-) Quote

You have all these "applications" really just games you add to your site, like plant trees to save the Earth, what is your 80's song or find eggs to hatch into pets. You send this things back and forth on FB with your FB friends and not to your actual hard drive. Almost any site can gather info on you, it's the nature of the beast sad to say. Quote
C_l_e_0..Q_c Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Oh I know what she's talking about... I have them aplenty on my own Facebook. But I also know that *some* of those applications will link to other sites, like Amazon, thus allowing Amazon (as an example) to gather data on you. Just before Christmas, there was an outcry because an app would make public what books you just bought on Amazon (that's why I take that specific company as my example, but they're not the only one). The end result is that lots of Christmas surprise gifts were ruined that way. In other words 'safe' or 'not safe' depends on what you mean.. Quote
Jenny in Atl Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Ew.. yuck, I did not know that. :tongue_smilie: Quote
C_l_e_0..Q_c Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Here's a link to an article discussing what I meant the other day... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/click_online/7375772.stm The popular social networking site allows users to add a variety of applications to their profile. But a malicious program, masquerading as a harmless application, could potentially harvest personal data Quote

Does this ring a bell with anyone:confused: Your friend is just asking you to add an application that is a little game based on the TV show Heroes. You can either add it and have it on your profile, or ignore the request and go on your merry way. BTW, your friend won't be notified if you ignore it. HTH, Quote
