Hoggirl
Can you talk to me about what happens when the ACT has to be rescheduled for inclement weather? I know I am supposed to check the ACT site on testing day. I was just wondering if someone had experience with this??? Ds is supposed to take the ACT next Saturday. They are forecasting BIG snow (well, big for us) on Wednesday, with below-freezing temperatures until Saturday. Does anyone know who makes the decision about whether or not the testing center will be open? Is this decision ever made ahead of time? Is there a standard number of weeks between the original test date and the make-up date? Or is it up to the testing center? I guess what I am asking is does the testing center or the ACT organization determine when the make-up date is? We have purposely chosen a more rural high school (ds took it there last year for Duke TIP, it worked well, so we stuck with it), but this means it may be more likely not to be open. When does the testing center receive the tests? What happens if the high school/testing center is supposed to receive the tests on a day that the school is closed for inclement weather? I was really wanting this box to be checked, but I fear it will not happen. Foolishly, I was thrilled when we got BIG snow (again, big for our area) this past week, b/c I thought, "No way will we get big snow two weeks in a row." WRONG! Any "been-there-done-that-this-is-what-happens" stories? TIA

klmama
I would just call the school where the test will be given, explain that your dc is scheduled to take the test there next week, and ask how you would know if the test had to be rescheduled due to weather. MorningGlory
Hi Cynthia! I've been wondering these same questions...surely this has happened to someone on the board before! My son is scheduled to take the ACT Saturday in a rural town north of Memphis. And yes, we are supposed to have BIG snow on Wednesday (we also had quite a bit yesterday...not really forecasted...). But the latest forecasts have indicated that the temps. later in the week are going to be warmer than first thought. So I'm hoping that the roads will be clear enough by Saturday. I would assume that you live somewhere in the same vicinity (Hoggirl...Arkansas?). So maybe the same is true for you, too. I know this conversation sounds odd to those who live where snow is a norm. We go YEARS without snow. This year has been quite overwhelming to say the least! And in our rural areas, there are no salt trucks or snow plows. So the snow/ice sits on the roads for what seems like forever. Anyway, HTH! At least it will bump your post. :) Jetta

On the day of testing, the ACT posts testing centers that are closed. I would LOVE to call the school where he is testing today, but they are CLOSED again! Even though most schools in our area were open yesterday and today they are STILL closed. It's just really rural with lots of gravel roads. It's a great facility and only a reasonable number of kids test there. As I wrote above, he tested well out there last year - if it ain't broke why fix it? :D So, finding out whether he goes on the scheduled testing day isn't the issue. I'm just sweating it out b/c he has a big church event the weekend of March 4th, and I fear it will be rescheduled for then, and he'll have to miss the church event. That's why I wondered if there was a prescribed number of weeks that the ACT people used. I'm going to call them today. I really need to :chillpill:

We don't go years without snow, but we have had an awful lot this year. My silly assumption that big now last week would keep us from big snow this week was completely illogical, of course! Wishful thinking. We are only one day away from it working, as it is going to warm up considerably on Saturday. This school just closes quickly b/c there are so many gravel roads in their area. I wish I would have chosen a larger venue, but that was part of the reason that I liked the one I chose. I have heard terrible stories about the testing at our ridiculously large local public high school. I just want it to be done! I am more anxious about it than he is,which is a good thing. :chillpill::chillpill::chillpill:
