Considering TOG

Recommended Posts

I have browsed through a few threads on here. I'm thinking ahead for what we are going to next year.

I was looking at TOG as a main program. Does it coincide with SOTW since we did the first volume of that for history this time? If I start with year 2 will there be a gap?

It seems like I add math, science, Latin and logic. Does that about sum it up?

Is this a good program? It seems pretty interesting, but it's quite pricey. It's not really a "curriculum in a box" because of the subjects it's missing, right? My son is above level in math and science so that actually works out fairly well for us.

I really love SOTW, I was just interested because it ties everything in with the history lesson and seems to follow the same time of pattern as SOTW and TWTM.

Any input anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated!

By the way, I'm planning now because I'm going to order a few things when I get my IRS refund!:tongue_smilie:

You do have to add those other subjects, right? Is it better to TOG instead of SOTW? What is the benefit of doing that instead of just sticking with SOTW? I'm thinking price here, because ultimately SOTW would be a fraction of the cost, but TOG looks pretty interesting, and I don't mind paying for it if it's good.

It would work out for me as far as information goes, since we are in Volume One of SOTW, so we'd pick up with the correct information, and then if we stuck with the program we'd be fine.

I guess I'm going to have to look at it again. What am I getting with TOG then?

There are three things that make TOG worth the money. First, you have several subjects that are integrated so that you are teaching them simultaneously. The main components are History and Literature. You can add on Worldview, Geography and Writing at the lower levels, and at R level, you also have Government and Philosophy. TOG gives you a reading list, vocabulary and timeline information and schedules everything for you by week.

The second reason that TOG is worth the money to me is the emphasis on Socratic discussions. I have participated in classes where the Socratic model was used, and I know how well it works. TOG gives you everything you need to help your dc find their own answers and think for themselves.

Lastly, TOG gives me what I need to educate myself. I took only 1 year of 20 C. US History and no other history in the course of my own education. I took one year of literature, and I am sure I never read more than one or two books. I don't know how I was allowed to graduate with honors from high school with that kind of background. But here I am knowing absolutely nothing about history and literature. TOG will provide the resources I need to educate my children. When I purchased it for dd5, I received all levels of material. So I can look ahead now and prepare for the future so that I am not scrambling when dd starts high school.

Here is a link I created for my blog that will give you a nice idea of what TOG is via a few minutes of video watching. This should really help. Once you watch the videos, if you're still stuck, ask away! I'll check in periodically today or you are always welcome to pm me. TOG is amazing. Getting Started With TOG.

You can count on Tina! She is a real TOG expert, has taught it at more than one level and is an excellent mentor for anyone starting out.

There are also numerous TOG users here on the board that are happily using the program. Like you, I found out about it here, and I've received a great deal of support since then.

I love it that TOG uses history as the backbone (spine) that pulls together other subjects. My daughter reads her core history each week, related literature books that make the history come alive, constructs a timeline and does her mapwork/geography and also writes about it in her composition work. We add our own grammar, spelling, math and science, as well as foreign language and electives. Oh, and we also add in readings from SOTW nearly every week too. (Dd loves SOTW because of its narrative style.)

TOG was designed for large families to use simultaneously at multi grade levels, but I am using it for one student and it works beautifully too.

Blessings to you as you explore your options!
