I'm thinking nonfiction, just because much of their assigned and independent reading is fiction. We're doing moderns this year. Successful RAs from the past, some with them together, some alone:

 

Watership Down

Carry On Mr. Bowditch

Complete Grimms Fairy Tales

For older:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (highly recommended)

Nurtured by Love (a fave of mine-obscure)

Outliers, The Story of Success

I think The Hiding Place would work well, too. I'm planning to do it with my middle kids after we finish Gone With the Wind.

fiction, but a huge, laugh-out-loud hit with my 10 and 12 yr olds: Tom Sawyer

 

complete bust: A Christmas Carol, one of the very few we didn't even finish.

Sea of Trolls (Vikings), Ender's Game, Artemis Fowl, The Hobbit, Oliver Twist, are a few off the top of my head.

 

Others that might work: A Single Shard (ancient Korea), Holes (modern USA), and The Bronze Bow (Rome, time of Jesus). My 9 years olds all liked A Door In the Wall (medieval England).
