A home for their hearts
I started my dd11 and ds10 in RS C because they were clueless with place value. I thought it would be a good starting point to help them develop their math skills. I'm a little concerned at how slow it is going to move for us now. I'm trying to get them caught up to grade level, around 4th or 5th. Would completing 2 levels in one year be too much? I love the curriculum and so far my dc are getting it, I'm just concerned that it's going to take them forever to get up to speed. Any thoughts? Crimson Wife
Unfortunately, I have personally found RS to be pretty tricky to accelerate because of the scripted lessons. That's actually a big reason why I switched my oldest to Singapore after RS C and will likely switch my younger kids after B.
Homemama2
RS C would have been hard for us to speed up, but that was with a 2nd grader so you may be able too. But RS D would be much easier. If we weren't doing RS with MM, I'd be doing 2 lessons a day easily. I've never seen the higher levels of RS.

Stacy, My oldest started RS B in 3rd grade, and did 2 lessons a day through Level D. Level E she did at normal pace last year (6th) and now she is doing Geometry at half pace with pre-algebra. She did do the drawing lessons at normal pace, because those are just too much to double up on. I would say yes and no. You can make this work, but I think you will have to realize that the end goal is to be ready for Algebra in 9th grade, not worry about being there in 4th or 5th. Most of the RS levels, at normal pace take longer than a year. You are not going to get 2 done in a year. You could get two done in a year and a half. Most middle school math assumes the child isn't ready for Algebra, or they would be on an advanced track and doing Algebra. Thus it reviews elementary topics, then takes them one step farther into larger numbers and into simple algebra problems. There is also more focus on order of operations, using negative numbers, statistics and such. My point is that there are students who go from RS E into Algebra, or shortly into Algebra. If you follow their recommended path into VT, VT is light on pre-algebra. You would do Geometry till about half way through then alternate with VT. That would take about a year and a half to two years and you would be solidly covering Algebra. As long as you are finishing up level E by 7th grade I don't see how you can really end up off course unless the child has an LD, or is extremely developmentally delayed and just can't do the algebra. That sort of thing will be an issue no matter what program you use. BTW my 5th grader will start level E in a couple of weeks. My 4th grader will start level D in about a month (she stalled out in level B/C and really struggled for a while, but is doing great now!) and my ds is 2nd grade finishing up level B and will start C before summer. Dolphin
I am working on catching my son up too. We are using Singapore. I tried using MM to supplement what he didn't know, but that didn't really work. I ended up getting the Home instructors guide and the text for the earlier levels, and we have been doing them orally. I am not sure how right start works, but if there is a review could you have them do that first, and then just focus on what they don't know. We have found big areas we have been able to skim through as ds already knew it. We skim as review, and then we would slow down when we got to new information (multiplication, division, units of measure etc...)
