ISO Study Bible for New Christian

Recommended Posts

Dh and I have been attending a Presbyterian church since October. At our first service, he "accepted Christ." His father who raised him is Budhist and DH has little to no Bible background at all. For example, our 4 year old was talking about the fiery furnace and he had never heard the story before. He wants a Bible with commentary that will explain to him the basics but he doesn't want a children's Bible. I have the Golden Book Children's Bible and he doesn't want to use that--he wants the real text with study aids. Any suggestions? Our church uses NIV so we probably should start with that.

We go to a conservative reformed Church. If the Pastor is quoting anything other than the Bible it is usually either: CS Lewis, NT Wright or Timothy Keller, especially Timothy Keller--the head pastor's daughter attends Keller's church and they are good friends.

Thank you,

Christine

One of my favorites is from The Way of the Master's Evidence Bible!

It has enough to study, yet cause you to think and want to know more!

I love it for new converts with a desire to know God's word!

WE stumbled across a few at a thrift store, so they are going cheap, as a new edition is coming out soon. I recommend Amazon or Christian Book Distributers.

What a wonderful miracle in his life! I am rejoicing with you!!

One thing I liked about mine was that it gives a plan to get to know the bible. It breaks it down into 2 weeks on each of the following:

Life and teachings of Jesus

" of Paul

Old Testament

Becoming Christian

Prayers in the Bible

Holy Spirit

Women of the Bible

Men of the Old Testament

Social Justice

God & Nature

Then in 6 months you go over:

The plot unveiled

Birthing a nation

Golden Age

Northern kingdom

Southern kingdom

Starting Over

Cries of pain

A surprising Messiah

Responses to Jesus

Final days

Word Spreads

Paul's legacy

Vital letters

So basically it's told in story format. I suggest visiting a bookstore and just sitting there and looking at them till you get a feel for one that feels right to you. Here's the link to mine through the publisher, it may have more info:

Guy/Neutral version:

I got mine at Barnes and Noble:

Please note that is the girl version, they carry the guy/neutral version for the same price.

The Quest Study Bible or the NIV Study Bible are good "basic" study Bibles. It also might be helpful for your DH to have a chronological Bible - helps put things into historical perspective. Another rec: maybe look into doing something like 'Bible Study Guide for All Ages' as a family so that everyone - parents and children of all ages alike - can study the Bible and learn together. www.biblestudyguide.com I THINK is the link. :001_huh: If you google it, it'll show up.;) So wonderful for you and DH! :001_smile:

We have the Evidence Bible and it's KJV only. Is it still like this? Personally, that isn't my favorite translation.

There is an NIV beginner's Bible that is for new Christians. I bought one for dd for Christmas. It's for adults, but they have notations and refer to passages that were quoted (all those places where Christ quoted the OT for instance) and there are great supplements in the back as well as some interesting indexes (all of Christ's parables, fi).

I'd get an ESV, Reformation Study Bible edited by R.C. Sproul, especially since they are attending a reformed church and like Keller, etc...

I have one of these and the notes are fabulous!!! I would also suggest the MacArthur Study Bible (available in ESV, New American Standard, and New King James) It has even more notes, word studies etc.

I am a member of a conservative Presbyterian church, and this is my first suggestion as well.

If you really want the NIV, the one at this link http://www.amazon.com/NIV-Spirit-Reformation-Study-Bible/dp/0310923603 is essentially the same.

Another poster suggested the MacArthur Study Bible. While I think it is a valuable resource, I would not recommend it in your situation because MacArthur does hold some doctrinal views that are not compatible with conservative Presbyterian/Reformed teaching. So, some of his notes might be confusing for someone new to the faith.
