Snack ideas....

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to replace all the cookies, ice cream, pudding, and snack cakes that my family eats. (Although I will always believe there is goodness and magic in a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies!)

What are some slightly more nutritious things that I can offer my kids at snacktime? My dd doesn't really like any fruit that I can think of (although I wish she did).

Thanks for your ideas!

Healthy snacks:

string cheese

yogurt (sprinkled with granola)

oatmeal

peanut butter with celery or apples

carrots with ranch

pretzels, cheese

not so bad for you cereal (such as cheerios)

peanut butter/jelly on wheat

toaster waffles with peanut butter

eggs/egg sandwiches

sandwich meat rolled with cheese

Actually, if you replace peanut butter with almond butter, it's even better for you.

Our snacks include protein if we can because it helps with blood sugar and therefore moodiness. It also tends to calm down cravings for less nutritious food. Mini meals are fine here, if they are using resources I haven't planned for dinner and are within budget.

My kids like:

~Dry cereal.

I'll get the sugar kind if I feel like giving a treat.

Sometimes I make the cereal into bars (peanut butter and marshmallows) or Chex mix.

~They also like dried apples. My dd also doesn't like fruits or veggies, but she does like the dried apples.

~Peanut butter crackers.

~Popcorn

That's a few of our favorites.

Good luck.

Sometimes kids will eat things if you present them in a different context.

Snacks I have around a lot:

pretzels

popcorn (I have an airpopper)

apples (slice and serve with cheddar cheese or peanut butter)

yogurt

you can make your own popsicles from yogurt and fruit pretty easily

tangerines

string cheese

cheddar cheese slices

whole wheat crackers

granola

trail mix

dried fruit (different kids like different types even within our family)

carrots

celery sticks

fruit salad

slices of kiwi or strawberries

homemade smoothies with yogurt and frozen fruit

spread peanut butter on a tortilla, put slices of banana on it, roll it up and slice them

Let them pick fruits and veggies to try. Try them in different ways. Offer things to dip like yogurt or nut butter, kids like to dip.

-Popcorn (air popped)

-homemade smoothies (baby spinach, frozen strawberries, banana, frozen blueberries, frozen yogurt, flax seed (just a little), local honey (if desired), raw nuts (if desired))

-cheese (string is easy to take with you but any is okay)

-yogurt with wheat germ

-pretzels, sun chips (okay, not so healthy but pretty good for chips)

-sandwich meat (we keep slices of our Boar's Head Lemon Pepper Chicken handy - my kids love to eat that stuff plain)

-pizzas made with flour tortillas as the crust (or you could probably use wraps as well)

-cheese quesadillas (use the microwave and they can do it themselves)

-milk & whole wheat crackers

-nuts

frozen fruit

veggies and dip

cheese and crackers

pretzels with homemade pico de gallo

homemade pita or bagel chips with pico de gallo or cream cheese dip

popcorn

I also use our coffee maker to keep hot water for tea and honey when they want it.

My kids beg me to make these. Here's the original recipe (super easy):

1 c. peanut butter

1/2 c. raisins

1/2 c. powdered milk

1/4 c. sesame seeds

1/4 c. honey

Mix all ingr. together and roll into 1 inch balls. Chill.

Here's how I modified:

I never have sesame seeds on hand, so I subbed oats (probably lost some of the protein doing that). And I eventually increased the oats to 1 cup because this dough is really sticky. One kid complained that it was too sweet so I reduced honey to 3 TBL. Also added 2 TBL wheat germ. Oh, and I made mine a little smaller than 1 inch - more to go around. Enjoy.
