kiana
I just found out that one of my old friends is, due to a theft issue involving her roommate, in another town many hours away with almost no food and no money, and has no paycheck coming for two weeks. She also has no transportation other than walking, and the nearest grocery is far away, so I cannot just send money. There aren't a lot of other resources where she lives. I was going to send her a care package with some food. I see the priority flat rate boxes go up to 15 lbs. I don't have a lot of money myself, so what's cheap and calorie-dense for how much room it takes that I can ship? Nutrients aren't really an issue at this point, it's only for two weeks. At the moment I'm thinking rice/beans, oatmeal/dried fruit (I get the fruit in bulk for myself, so I'll just throw some into a bag). Any other suggestions? JoyfulMama
I like your ideas, as that is what popped (popcorn?) into my head first. Also, how about a small treat - a sweetbread mix or other similar, that takes just oil/water. (I'm thinking one might exist - I don't buy them due to food restrictions.) Maybe a non-breakable jar of pb? Pasta? Elbow mac comes in a more compact box, and you could empty the box and put it in a Ziploc to conserve space. Rebecca VA
Do you belong to Amazon Prime? If your friend lives in the United States, you can have some (discounted) food sent to her, and she'll get it in two days. It won't cost anything for shipping. That's a terrific idea (and cost effective--you can spend what you would have in shipping for more food). If you don't have Amazon Prime and they are still running Amazon Momprime you can sign up and get Amazon Prime free. I can't tell if it's still running or not as we are signed up and it takes me to my page but this looks like the sign up link. http://www.amazon.com/gp/mom/signup/welcome
Sparkle
Actually a flat rate priority box weight limit is 70 lbs. How about peanut butter, granola bars, packages of dry soup mix (like Lipton), packages of hot chocolate mix, tea bags, pasta and/or gnocchi, cans of spaghetti sauce (like Hunt's or Del Monte), Bisquick mix, instant potatoes, Nutella. Brindee
Aside from what's been mentioned, Top Ramen is light and easy to fix. Also, maybe instant coffee and powdered creamer and a little sugar? Wafer-type cookies are light, and might be a nice treat.
