mo2
Pros/cons? Opinions? ETA: I would be using cursive with a 9yo who has horrible, horrible handwriting. Also interested in PreK for a 4yo, hoping to ward off the handwriting problems the older one has! Edited January 27, 2011 by mo2
krismoose
I haven't used HWT, but have successfully used HHFK to teach cursive first to my 5yo (now 6yo). Pros are that the font is large, the lowercase letters always start on the bottom line, and the letters are grouped according to type of "bump/wave" used. A con is there is not very much practice in the book itself, but you have permission to copy pages for the child for whom it was purchased. I did that with my ds for the first half of the book, and then he did the second half pretty much as-is, and then moved on. (They also sell a wipe-off set with the cursive strokes, but we didn't get it.) We liked it and I'll be trying it with dd next year. Their K manuscript book is nice as well. I made a wipe-off book out of it for my 3yo dd, and she has taught herself many letters, with me helping her only part of the time (she's got a great memory for what she hears, apparently :D)
Farrar
The HWT cursive is extremely different from other cursives. Just be aware. That could be a pro for a kid who needs to start from scratch or a con for a kid who already has experience with cursive. Just something to think about. But whether you get it for the older kid or not, I would strongly recommend it for your 4 yo. We have loved it.
