Say that on your way to refill your Kleen Kanteen, you snag one of your Much Too Nice for Public School shoes on the cord of your Dyson, fall on your vinegar-cleaned floor, break your leg and require an overnight stay at a medical facility.

Are you "in hospital" or "in the hospital" or "at the hospital"?

Well, thankfully, we've got faucets to drink from on both ends of the house - and the shop vac is way too big to trip over, even barefooted, as we usually are (inside or out!) However, for the sake of argument...

If I'm the patient who is being kept, I'd say "in the *%$@ hospital"

If I'm visiting someone, but not kept there against my will and/or better judgement, I'd be "at the hospital" (but without the angsty residual issues, hence the cleaner language).

Not sure I would ever use the first option... unless I'd developed a stutter that prohibited me from saying words that begin with "th"... that might be one time I'd say "in hospital". You know, since I'd have broken my leg on vacuum and had to have doctor set it. ;)

(Not meaning to offend anyone who says "in hospital" - it's just been a rough day, and this made me feel a bit silly and lighthearted, and it was easier than sending one of children to bedrooms for rest of day.)

I always wanted to be British and say "in hospital", but it just doesn't sound right with a southern accent.

Same here. Well, I mean, I don't have a southern accent, but it just would sound so fake and pretentious coming out of my mouth. So I don't say it. But I love to hear it.

I'm British and say In Hospital. I miss the word the out of a lot of things I say, now that I think about it.

I'm from the North-West of England and we miss quite a few words out of our sentences. Think of the Yorkshire housekeeper in The Secret Garden and that's how most of my family sounds. Except we're from Lancashire.
