I still feel so new even though I've been hsing for two years, but I want to try this! :001_smile:

The key to successful homeschooling is a parent that takes on homeschooling like it's the coolest hobby ever. And then also can mellow out and have fun at the right moments. Anyone too rigid sounds . . . scary as a homeschool mom.

I would avoid at all costs (in retrospect) putting my kids in ps in their kinder year. (Live and learn.)

Essential curriculum: MathUSee, SOTW, WWE, FLL, I See Sam books, Spelling Workout.

Favorite memory: I love seeing plays w/ the kids. Really loved when they made a Norman castle out of Rice Krispy treats. Also, we travel a lot and I have great pics of the boys doing lessons on planes, in hotel rooms. It's not a downer, they seem to have fun in a new setting.

Nightmare: Read, Sing, Write, Spell. Or whatever the bleep it's called. . . Sing, Read, Write, Spell, Tear Your Hair Out should be it's name.

3. Curriculum and books that were/are essential for my success and sanity were/are....TWTM, CM books, Sally Clarkson books.

4. My favorite memory of homeschooling was when...my kiddos learned how to read.

Thought this might be a great thread. Can you complete these sentences and explain:

1. The Key to successful homeschooling is.....Consistency! Be consistent in what you expect of your children and be consistent in doing school.

2. I would avoid...... at all cost. Laziness. Taking a couple of days off every single week just because you don't feel like doing school is going to add up really fast, and when you reach the end of the school year and realize you aren't even halfway through your books - yikes!

3. Curriculum and books that were/are essential for my success and sanity were/are.... TWTM

4. My favorite memory of homeschooling was when..... When my oldest read her first word :hurray:

5. .......curriculum gave me nightmares. LOL! Saxon math...just looking at it made me shudder.

Two more things I would add that are not books/curriculum, but are necessary for my sanity and success are chocolate and coffee!

1. The Key to successful homeschooling is to find a good balance. Provide a good education for your kids, but have fun while doing it! I so enjoy having my kids home with me and the opportunity to watch them grow.

2. I would avoid sticking with something if it makes you and/or your kids miserable just "to finish it." Life's too short and there are so many wonderful things out there.

3. Curriculum and books that were/are essential for my success and sanity were/are: The two things that I'm most thankful for right now are Math Mammoth (lifesaver for my eldest), and Deconstructing Penguins (in the middle of this and enjoying it). However, I see this as constantly evolving as my kids grow. Although not "curriculum," these boards are essential to me at this point too! I'm an addict!

4. My favorite memories of homeschooling have been teaching my kids to read.

5. Saxon Math gave me nightmares. I bought it when my oldest was struggling with math because I pushed her too much (in 1st grade I think), looked through it, and immediately resold it.

1) IMO, the key to successful homeschooling is continuous, steady progression towards a goal.

2) I would avoid buying lots of *boxed* programs until I'd found what works best for us.

3) I think the WTM is essential for my success and sanity. A java chip grande from Starbucks is not bad either. :)

4) My favorite memory of homeschooling is hearing him read his first word.

5) I sleep well most nights, so I guess nothing has bothered me so far.

The key to successful homeschooling is ... doing what works for the primary teacher. (If Mom isn't happy... no one is happy).

I would avoid assuming... what worked for one child, even one of my own, would work for another child.

Curriculum and books that are essential are.. whatever is working today. Nothing works for long in this house. We are constantly adapting.

My favorite memory of homeschooling was when... we went to the park and I found other homeschoolers to talk to.

Nightmare curriculum... I have avoided disasters that bad. Plenty of money spent on things that didn't work, but no nightmares.

1. The Key to successful homeschooling is.....

Discipline. You have to get off the forums and actually do school. :D

2. I would avoid...... at all cost.

I am not sure I can think of anything to put here. Each family is so unique. Many people hs in a totally different way than I do and get great results. Maybe the thing I would avoid is assumptions and taking a cookie cutter approach to schooling.

Instead observe your child, figure out what works for them, and use that to help them learn how they best learn, so they are equipped for the future.

3. Curriculum and books that were/are essential for my success and sanity were/are....

Hmmm, not books, attitude. My attitude makes or breaks it all. I need to be ready to deal with the kiddo's negative attitudes, and not take it personally. There has been no one book or curriculum that I couldn't live without. I could take almost anything and make it work, some would just require more work than others.

4. My favorite memory of homeschooling was when.....

Too many to list. Most often the moments when something finally clicks, or we have fun being silly together while learning.

5. .......curriculum gave me nightmares. LOL!

Well I still struggle with SWR. But I don't know it qualifies for nightmare status. Most everything I buy I research pretty thoroughly so I have had limited failures and even most of those I have been able to make work, but then change to something else when we are done.

:iagree:Are you my long lost sister? Aside from saying "first book" rather than "first word", this is exactly what I was going to type.
