HollyVanH
This semester I taught a Percy Jackson class to a group of 12 homeschoolers: http://www.knittedthoughts.com/2011/01/teaching-percy-jackson.html Take a look at my post if you'd like ideas about how to do this with your own child. It was a really wonderful opportunity to expand on the mythology they learned in their reading and great chance to enjoy the world of books as a group! scrapbookbuzz
Might have to take a closer look at that when I get back to being able to concentrate on anything! Thanks for sharing!

It mostly depends on what you think is appropriate. :001_smile: I preread them all to decide for my DD.

Is the content appropriate for seven year olds? Thanks, Alley My 7 year old loves them (we are currently reading them outloud), however I did read them all before letting my dd9 read them. The main characters start out as 12 year olds and end up (by the 5th book) as 15/16 year olds.
HollyVanH
This class was for kids aged 9-12. It's true there is a lot of fighting between various Greek mythological characters, but there's a lot of that among the original myths as well. I would say, if your kids have read Harry Potter, this would be fine for them. What age were the students in the class?
HollyVanH
I read these aloud to my 8 and 11 year old daughters -- they both loved it and that sparked the idea for the class. One of the greatest parts of this (and the Harry Potter class I taught through the same learning center) was watching the kids celebrate how much they loved these characters together. I didn't mention a lot about it in the post I wrote, but we also did a lot of character analysis and they loved debating motivation, character flaws, development, etc. These are all skills that will easily transfer to other novels. goldberry
Gosh, can I come live by you???? There is nothing in my area for homeschoolers. Starting this Friday we are driving 1 hour and 15 min just to get to an art/drama co-op. Some things you just need a group for. Your kids are so lucky! HollyVanH
Aw - thanks coloradoperkins. I actually drive nearly an hour to the learning center where I teach these classes and my kids take my own and other amazing classes. We go twice a week and it's definitely worth it to us. I try to create classes I know my kids would love and that they would really get something out of... I focus on literature and writing. I'm really lucky though, that my kids get a chance to take amazing hands-on history, science and art classes there too. I'm always overwhelmed by what I know must be a huge amount of time and effort these teachers put into their lesson planning. We're really basically a homeschool co-op - type setup, but I'm amazed at all the talented moms who participate. Many hold impressive credentials, but have left high paying careers to devote themselves to their children's education. I'm lucky they've chosen to share their specialties at this learning center, so my kids and others benefit! Gosh, can I come live by you???? There is nothing in my area for homeschoolers. Margo out of lurking
Perfect timing! My ds was not interested in the books at all. He read Red Pyramid last week and just finished the first Percy Jackson book today. Thanks, Holly.
HollyVanH
Hooray! I'm glad the timing worked out for you Kristine. My kids and my nephews have LOVED the series. Even my 16 year old niece sat up late reading the last book when they came to visit this last Thanksgiving. Perfect timing! My ds was not interested in the books at all. He read Red Pyramid last week and just finished the first Percy Jackson book today. Thanks, Holly.
