Pam B
I wear Levis. Too Super Low, Bootcut usually, but I do have a pair that has tighter legs, but they're not the skinny jeans. I would wear them, but my legs are too skinny! LOL I think you should wear whatever you want- as long as you don't look like you are trying to be cool or younger than you are?? But I guess that's what you're asking.

Catwoman
Short people don't look good in bootcut, I believe. I think they can look really cute if you wear them with heels, and make sure your top or sweater is relatively form-fitting and isn't too long. I honestly think it's often less about the jeans and more about the shoes. Skinny jeans look adorable with ballet flats (unless you have boat-sized feet,) but they can also make you look like an adorable pixie if you're very petite. The same skinny jeans worn with athletic shoes make everyone but the tallest women look like they're all feet. How tall are you? Night Elf
I definitely do not have the figure for skinny jeans but even if I did, I wouldn't be comfortable wearing something that every single teenager in this area is wearing. I go for mom jeans. My favorite is Gloria Vanderbilt. They just fit me the way I like. I have an apple shape so I can't wear anything other than waist height, because it gives me a big old muffin top! As it is, the waist height gives me one too. :(
LauraGB
I think they can look really cute if you wear them with heels, and make sure your top or sweater is relatively form-fitting and isn't too long. :iagree: I'm short and bootcut are the only ones that I feel comfortable in. I'm also skinny (ie - the figure of a teenage boy :glare:) and they make me look curvy, which I like. Regarding skinny jeans - yes, I have seen a few women irl pull it off, but mostly what I see out and about are middle age women wearing too tight jeans and trying to look young but looking like idiots instead. I think at our age, skinny jeans are best with a tunic type top and great, dainty shoes or classic boots (no Uggs! I'm thinking black/brown leather riding-type boots, with a nice, reasonable heel). I mean, really, they are just denim leggings, so the jeans should be the last thing you notice when looking at the whole outfit. But the skinny jean thing is tricky, imo - you either do it right or you don't, and there's not a lot of forgiveness there. I can't wait 'til it passes. Snickerdoodle
Yes, I can do the skinny jean thing with classic boots and a long shirt. (ie jeans as leggings). Boot cut, really? jvenice
Diane Gilman on HSN caters to the over 40 crowd and has great jeans...bootcut, skinny, and jeggings. They are great and comfortable too even though I am not quite 40! I had to put that in there since I am so close and hanging on by a thread!! HollyDay
Lee is the only thing I can wear now, but I'm approaching 50 not 40. I used to love LLBean jeans, but they changed their line and now I cannot find a good size. 10 is ridiculously tight but 12 is baggy too big. Some moms from dd's basketball team really like Not Your Daughter's Jeans. But, they are way out of my price range.

tammyw
For jeans, I've had success at Nordstroms (ask for help - they are FABULOUS there!), Lucky Jeans (again, they're very knowledgeable), and J.Jill. I am 5'7", 38 years old, 130 pounds, and wouldn't be caught dead in a pair of skinny jeans. Now this year I did buy a pair of skinny black pants, but I only wear them with knee high boots and a long top/long sweater. I am thin but I have an hour glass shape (aka curves) and I personally only like to wear skinny bottoms if I wear boots and longer top. I love bootleg jeans though - they are my fave! Bootleg jeans also never go out of style.
Tabrett
I'll be 40 this year and am fairly thin and short. I LOVE skinny jeans. I HATE low rise jeans. I have a big baby pooch from having 4 dc that will not go away with weight loss (I have been down to 105 lbs and I still had a big, big pooch). I wear Levi's 505 straight leg jeans. They have a mid-rise and are as close as I can get to a skinny jean and not have a muffin top.
Pink Fairy
I've seen skinny jeans on some moms (not the ones that look like they were spray painted on), and they look fine. If you have a cute figure, you can wear pretty much anything at any age, as long as it's not too tight or too revealing for the circumstances. ETA: In the don't category, stay far, far away from the muffin top look if you can. It's just not attractive (sadly, I know this from experience :tongue_smilie:). Ali in OR
I'm pretty short (like to think I'm 5'4" but I'm not quite) and I think my most flattering look is boot cut. I love my Lee jeans (size 8 short) and wear them with my Dansko clogs. No one has ever accused me of being high fashion, but the look works well here in Oregon. Cindyg
The best jeans I've ever had I got at Cold Water Creek. They are really light weight, really stretchy, really comfortable. I feel like I'm wearing sweat pants. Or neckid. I don't see a style name on the tag, but it's 96% cotton and 4% Spandex. They have a "knit denim" jean on their website, and that might be what this wonderful pair of pants is. But it is truly wonderful!! Oh, it cost somewhere close to $100, but I got it 50% off; and Cold Water Creek does often have half-off everything in the store. Go to the website and sign up; then they'll send you sales notices. Mergath
I'm 5'4 and a size 10 thanks to my hips. All the women in my family are short and sturdy. Not fat, just sort of strongly built. I have a horrible time finding jeans. They're usually too tight in the hips and too baggy in the thighs. Bootcut works best for me, worn with a pair of heels or nice leather boots. I like the look of the jeans from Old Navy, but the quality isn't great.
MissKNG
I'm 5'7" and look best in boot cut. The "bell bottoms" of the boot cut draw the eyes upward thus making my legs look longer and more slender than they really are. I don't wear skinny jeans because I don't like stuff that is too tight. And I'm about 120lbs so I could probably pull them off. I've always had the best jean luck at American Eagle. LG Gone Wild
What is an acceptable pair of jeans for an almost 40 ish mom to wear? What if you have a cute little figure like LG gone Wild? Are skinny jeans acceptable? Why is it so hard to buy pants? I don't wear jeans. Skinny jeans can look good when paired with a dress. Tunic top and flats are good with skinny jeans, too. Lands End has some nice combinations that feature skinny jeans. The problem that I see is that people wear jeans that are way too tight. And people wear skinny jeans when they have a body type that is not well served by that cut. Boot cut works so I am surprised that you don't find them flattering. There is a cut of jeans out there cut for curvy women which I found at Ann Taylor loft. It's the one and only pair of jeans that I have. The darker the wash, the more elegant. Now, if I did do jeans. I would wear slim fit, straight cut with Doc Martens boots (but not tucked in the boots).
LauraGB
Boot cut, really? Maybe I just have really bad memories of the 70's. I have a waist but no hips. I'm 5'2". Levis 545 Low Boot Cut are my favorite jeans. The medium length are long enough to work with shoes or heels and they can easily go from casual to classy. I'm 5'4" (almost - apparently I shrunk some :glare:), btw. I think they have short lengths available in the stores, too.
Snickerdoodle
Ok, I think I misunderstand. I thought all jeans that were form fitting were skinny jeans. I looked at the Chico's website and all their jeans look like skinny jeans to me. Those 545 Levis are not considered skinny jeans? Those look cute. The 524 Levis are too low rise for me. I don't like the way low rise feel on my body. Oh look, the Levi 512 are more mid rise. Maybe I need to try them on.

Veritaserum
I like Levis 512 in either a straight or bootcut leg. It has a higher rise, which I like because I hate exposing my back when I lift my arms. A higher rise also helps prevent a muffin top. :)

Garga
Snickerdoole, Jeans are TOUGH to buy. I might look AWESOME in a certain brand of boot cut, but HORRIBLE in another brand of boot cut. It's all trial and error. I can wear a straight leg and I can wear a skinny jean. (I'm 38.) I can't wear boot cut. I look like I'm trying to be a teenager in boot cut. It all depends on the individual person's body shape and height. (I'm 5'3 and weigh 130 with a small chest, tiny waist and pouchy flabby tummy.) Somehow the boot cut just looks bad on me, though it's supposed to look good. Straight cut looks fine, and the skinny jeans look good. The key to the skinny jean, is to wear it with a suede boot, and not flats. Also, I wear a long, thin sweater that's open at the front, so that my rear isn't hanging out. If you are a grown woman wearing skinny jeans with flats, I think you end up looking like the Grinch in shape. But, if you wear the mid-calf length boots, it will balance you out. And then the longer top is important (I don't do the tunic, I wear a fitted shirt with the long drapey sweater and sometimes a long scarf.) I get a lot of compliments, so I don't think I look like I'm trying too hard. Ok--that's my take on skinny jeans for grownups. Oh--and it depends on the skinny jeans. Some brands just fit weird (I mean, really weird....), but others fit great. You just have to try them all on until something works (and then remember it and stick with it!!!!) cjbeach
I'm petite so whatever jean I buy I try for a short or buy petite. Mom jeans to me are high waisted, I don't wear high-waist anything. I have a problem buying jeans that don't stretch too much. By the end of the day I have a baggy bottom in most of my jeans. I have a pair from ARden B I bought 7 years ago that are about the only ones that don't stretch too much. I like straight cuts right not. I keep meaning to order these from Gap. Because I am as big as an elf I love heels. My current favorite shoe with skinny jeans and most cuts are booties. :)

Pretty in Pink
I say that as long as you're not rocking a muffin top you can get away with most any jean. I do avoid extremely ripped jeans and those with obvious 'whiskering' at the top of the thighs, or any other features that look like something I'd see on a fifteen year old.
