SeekingSimplicity
Ds (5) is driving us all nuts here lately. After he eats a meal, he's so wound up he practically bounces off the walls. His sisters are not able to do their school work because he's into everything; dh keeps asking me what in the world I fed this child. It's always shortly after meals that he gets this way. Breakfast this morning was oats with brown sugar, scrambled eggs and buttered toast, and OJ. I don't normally buy juice, it was just something I was craving. Also most of our meals are gfcf, but he does not have to be gf so I let him have toast (I keep regular bread on hand for dh, but the non-gf kids love it too). I'm beginning to think I really need to eliminate gluten and possibly sugar completely from his diet.
AK_Mom4
It may that he is perfectly normal and is just getting revved up after a meal that's heavy in simple carbs (OJ, brown sugar, toast). If that's the case, add more protein and fat in place of the carbs to keep him full. It's possible it's a food allergy, too. Most common ones that I know of that might cause this type of reaction are milk, wheat, eggs, soya, beef, pork, chicken, and corn. There's probably more. My oldest DS has always been sensitive to milk - it revs him up and then gives him a stomach ache. Not a great combination in an already very active kid! You might make progress if you do a food diary on the kiddo for a couple weeks - write down every single thing he eats and record his behavior right after. SeekingSimplicity
I"m trying to keep track of what he eats. We had him tested just a few month ago (last summer) for food allergies and he wasn't allergic to anything then. This is something that's just started happening over the last few weeks. I don't know if it's a sudden onset of allergies, or intolerance, or that his reaction to spikes in blood sugar has changed. At any rate, something is happening to get him unusually wound up. Molly
I wonder whether it would be worth getting some blood sugar checks, as whatever it is is affecting majorly. Perhaps it may shed some light on what is going on.
momchiroto2
Most likely food sensitivities are the cause....
Dobela
I suspect blood sugar changes. How long is he going without eating between meals? Is this every meal or just breakfast? Is he in a growth spurt or entering one? Or just more active in general? He could be running down some between meals, not realizing it, and then just feeling so much better after he eats that he doesn't realize his exhuberance. Ihave seen my children go from drooopy to fired up after breakfast just because they ate for the first time in 12 hours or so. Typically food sensitivity in my children brings out ugly behaviors and a loss of energy, not more energy.
Cricket
Most of the time my dc do this too. None of them have food allergies. I always figure it is more the change in activity (before eating lunch, for example, we are sitting quietly doing schoolwork and lunch is usually a louder affair) that makes them go a little nutty. It's not that abnormal to get an energy boost after eating, is it?
