Dh hade a heart attack Saturday morning, hope to be home today

Recommended Posts

I have not been around much at all so if I was supposed to answer anyone, that is why--esp. on the special needs board.

My dh is only 45 and at the doctor Tuesday they said he was in very good shape and other than working on his blood sugars--they upped his meds for Type II diabetes and said he should work on loosing a bit of weight--he was declared perfectly healthy.

Saturday morning I took him to the ER (yes I drove in a snow storm 45 minutes away to a heart center). In less than an hour from the time he arrived at the ER he was up in the cath lab having surgery and 2 stents put in.

He is doing better but has had a fever off and on and his blood sugars were 200-305 all day Sunday despite insulin but were down to 117 this morning.

Sorry to hear about that. I'll pray. I've had a bug and not on the boards much....I will try to look for an update from you.

Thanks for all of the prayers and well wishes.

Dh is now home and doing well. We are learning ever more about 2 different forms of insulin to inject a total of 5 times a day, getting the carb counting down, figuring out the 5 new meds, rehab schedule, follow up doctor's appointments, etc. Amazingly (at least to us) we can return to work with no limitations on Monday already.

As to his symptoms--the first thing he had was a feeling of a pulled muscle in his shoulder. This was not concerning though as he felt it after his workout at the YMCA where he was doing some major weight lifting. He though had shortness of breath Saturday morning and that is what sent us in.

We likely should have called the ambulance but a few factors:

1. we are rural and the ambulance would come from 20 minutes in the opposite direction from the hospital that could hanlde this (our local hospital has to transfer out for cath lab)

2. It was a snow storm so it would have taken longer for them to get here.

3. Dh was VERY hesitant about going in and calling 911 was not on his list of things to do.

Again, we should have called the ambulance or at least called and had one head from the heart center towards us and then put him in the ambulance when we met part way. Time really is critical.

He though didn't have the chest pains, shortness of breath, irregular or fast heart rate, etc.

Oh, and on the MDOT thing, we did get a call today that they are coming in MAY to do an appraisal of our home and likely we will be bought out very soonly thereafter and have 90 days to relocate. I have had kids crying today and one that wanted to start packing today--not because she wants to move but because she doesn't want the movers touching her stuff.

oh no! I'm SO SORRY!!!!!!!!:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Was there damage to his heart?

I want to tell you NOT to worry about his blood sugars right now. I used to obsess over my mother's when she was in the hospital. The doctors told me to have HIGH blood sugars while so sick is better than low, because low blood sugars could be life threatening. They also told me her IV's were causing a rise in her blood sugars as well as just being sick causes the blood sugars to be unpredictable. So please, at least about that, don't worry too much right now. But maybe it's different for heart patients? Ask his doctor.

I'm so sorry for you both! Take this opportunity to eat a heart healthy diet and exercise together. It will be special time together and hopefully will keep him healthy; both with his heart AND his diabetes.

I'm SO sorry for you and your family!!!:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:

They did tell us that higher sugars were normal during illness but he had type II diabetes and his blood sugars were running in the 200s before this---which is why we had seen the specialist a few days before the heard attack.

His parents both have had heart attacks, both have diabetes, and his mother is a kidney transplant patient and his father is on dialysis so genetics are not being friendly to him right now.

I totally understand your fears! My dh is 38, too, and his father died of a heart attack at 45 (when we were in college together). Dh is obese, just had his cholesterol checked and the numbers were NOT good. I'm terrified that our kids aren't going to finish growing up with a dad!
