holdinon
I am going to make the switch this year from Spelling Power to Spelling Workout. I have two questions. One is for anyone who uses SW. The other is for those who are familiar with both. 1. Do I need the teacher's book for SW? 2. If dd (age 9) is almost through Group D in Spelling Power, which SW should I get... should I start with A, and have her work through quickly until she starts to find it difficult, then slow to a "normal" pace? Or go ahead and start with one of the higher levels, and if so, which one? She actually could use a little extra practice....I am finding that a lot of words that she has already done in SP, she still mis-spells in her writings. Thanks for opinions... Sue G in PA
No need for the TM, IMO. We've never used it. I wouldn't start her in "A"...it'll bore her to tears. My ds8 does level B (half-way through) and the words get more challenging. If she is a "good" to average speller...I would start in C. If she needs help, start in B and do a pre-test for each lesson until she misses more than 1 or 2 words. FWIW...my non-nat. spellers don't do well with SWO. THey can memorize the lists, score well on the tests but can't apply what they have learned to their writing. My dd11 (nat. speller) consistently scores 100% on her tests and can apply it to her writing fairly well. I'm ditching SWO for my non-nat. spellers and will be using All About Spelling next year. I'm finding that they need more of a phonics/rules based system with the actual "whys" of why we spell certain words certain ways, KWIM? We will be combining this w/ daily dictation and/or copywork for reinforcement.
holdinon
that's interesting ...that's the same problem we have with SP....maybe it's not SP, maybe she just struggles with spelling....she's great with everything else...guess that's just going to be her weak-spot. I think we do need to change, just to try something different....I may put off the purchase of SW though, and look around a little longer.... Sue G in PA
I highly recommend checking out All About Spelling if she struggles with the format of SP and SWO. It's a much different program that uses rules and phonemes to teach the rules of spelling and the "whys" of spelling...something most programs don't do. It's great for hands-on learners as it uses letter/phoneme tiles and has the dc spell the words using the tiles. You can also write them down, but the tiles are nice for those tactile/hands-on learners. You can do a search of the board for AAS and you'll find a wealth of info and opinions. holdinon
ok, i have just spent way too much time on the aas website...my kiddos have now destroyed my home while i have been "pre-occupied mommy" (lol)! but anyway, i think it looks great! probably just what we are looking for. i'm going to have dh look at it tonight. (he and dd think/learn a lot alike, so we will see what he has to say). my guess is...he'll like it.... thanks for the input
