momto2Cs
I am trying to work out language arts for my dd. She is almost 8, and is just learning to read. I plan to finish up The Reading Lesson with her by fall, and then she should be reading at roughly a second grade level, which I am hoping will go up more quickly from there. What language arts programs/books/writing tools would you recommend for a second-grade level reader?
kathkath
Honestly I would not bother with a reading program just yet, but rather get her hooked onto reading by giving her lots of choices among books that would be relatively easy for her. Get her reading a LOT every day "for fun" and I bet before you know it she will be at or above grade level. Reading lots of simple stuff out of interest will do far more for vocabulary and fluency than any program will. That is typical of most children unless there is a problem with LD or something. texasmama
First Language Lessons 1/2 is a great, mostly oral program. Both levels can be done in one year for a child in second grade if the first program is too simple. My kids have loved it. WWE 1 would be a good one to look into, as well. This is a fairly demanding program, IMO, so I would start with the first level. They are both scripted programs which are easy for a parent to use - just open and go. (FLL is for grammar and WWE is for writing/dictation/narration.)
Mallory
My middle boy didn't learn to read until 8, but he took off quickly. I agree WWE (probably level 1) and FLL (though I'd say start with level 3). I wouldn't worry about reading or spelling yet.

I wouldn't jump ahead but start at the beginning. Heather
johnandtinagilbert
The Phonics Road is a complete language arts program. I started it with my son, who was a late bloomer for reading. PR improved his reading confidence and introduced spelling and grammar in ways that made sense to him and showed application across language arts. I love the program. I have a review of it here; and on my blog, you'll find many posts of how the program works. Take a peek at PR1 archives. There is also a link in my siggy. I became an affiliate last fall b/c I love and believe in the program. It's good stuff!
Lisa in the UP of MI
I used AAS as a learn-to-spell-to-learn-to-read-program. It worked very well. First grade dd can read anything now. Any program of this type (AAS, Phonics Road, SWR, WRTR) would be good.
Ellie
"Language arts"? Are you wanting to work with her reading skills, or did you want grammar or composition? or all of the above? With a child that young, *I* would be working on her reading skills and not worrying about anything else yet, until her reading was age-level.
