FaithManor
Karyn, (((HUGS))) I'm praying for your furnace which might kind of sound crazy to some, but negative 34 is life threatening. Do you have a fireplace, a camp stove, an aladdin lamp?? Anything you can light up for some warmth? Are the roads decent, can you pack up and go somewhere? I know you must be worried about your pipes, but I'm scared for you!!! Please keep us posted. Faith
Parrothead
Uggh! Do you have a secondary heat source?
jenn1129
also praying. :grouphug:
Carol in Cal.
Wow, this is really dangerous! I'm praying for you. I wish there was something I could do to help. When I lived in Vermont, the one time I picked up a male hitchhiker was when it was 10 below and very windy outside. I figured that not doing so was almost like murder. Sahamamama
I was going to ask, "Where do you live, where it's minus 34 degrees?" but then I see you are up in Canada. Wow, that's cold. Do you have a woodstove? A fireplace? Anything? Perhaps you could start now to put everyone in layered clothing, shut the doors to most rooms, consolidate into the kitchen. If you have a cooking range, you could (carefully) light the burners from time to time to put some heat in the kitchen. My dad used to do this when our furnace didn't work, to give him time to get the woodstove pumping out the heat. Be careful of the flames, obviously. Keep the water running slowly through the pipes, so they don't freeze and burst. If it's going to be a long time before you get heat, can you go somewhere else? You could turn off the main water valve, then turn all your faucets on and drain out the pipes before you go. :grouphug: Edited January 12, 2011 by Sahamamama
chickenpatty
:grouphug: My goodness! It is 34 above freezing here and I am shivering in a heated house. I hope your heat is fixed very quickly!!
OregonNative
Oh no! I'm so sorry. I'm praying that it gets resolved quickly:grouphug: Keep us posted

ElizabethB
:grouphug: and prayers. We are hiding inside because it is 15 degrees right now and a high of 22 today. I normally get my allergy shot today, but will do it on Friday when it is supposed to be a "balmy" 33. We are a bit wimpy because we spent the last year in Santa Monica (Los Angeles, the part right near the beach.) The lowest ever recorded temperature there was 33! specialmama
:iagree: And thank you for reminding me why I don't want to live any farther north. :tongue_smilie: ROFL!!! Don't worry, I think the exact same thing every time I hear of a snake or deadly spider in someone's house down south! We all have our burdens and I choose snow hands-down. ;) OK so it was a FALSE ALARM!!!! A friend came and checked it out, he did something and it's working. I think it had turned off in the night but when I went to turn the heat up nothing happened. I don't know what to say except THANK YOU GOD and thanks for praying! Scary stuff! My dh thinks I'm just paranoid and waiting for the axe to fall LOL. We've had over 10 grande in urgent, mandatory repairs around Christmas time (3 separate incidents) and it just wouldn't shock me if the furnace went. ;)
BikeBookBread
I'm so, so sorry! We lost power during a blizzard once in Minot - it was -15 outside. We turned on the gas oven and sat around it in the kitchen. :grouphug:

We've had over 10 grande in urgent, mandatory repairs around Christmas time (3 separate incidents) and it just wouldn't shock me if the furnace went. ;) This is exactly what happened to ours at Thanksgiving (minus the expense, since we renewed our home warranty), and the whole thing went out about a week later. Not to scare you or anything! It could have been repaired, but it would have been a series of quick fixes. It was the original furnace from when the house was built in the mid 1970's. We just replaced ours with a heat pump, though I don't think I'd recommend one of those in Canada! For the record, I don't like snow or spiders. But I'm in the Midwest and get both, plus New Year's Eve tornadoes.
MorganClassicalPrep
ROFL!!! Don't worry, I think the exact same thing every time I hear of a snake or deadly spider in someone's house down south! We all have our burdens and I choose snow hands-down. I think I'll move to Canada... :D I can deal with snow much, MUCH better than spiders. And I don't even want to think about that other thing you mentioned. I'd probably have to move out of my apartment, I'm that afraid of them.
