Mom0012
I am using WWE 3 with my 3rd grader and she's doing great with it. She also does daily copywork to practice her cursive in A Reason for Handwriting. For 4th grade, I am planning on using WWE 4 and continuing with copywork. Is this enough writing for a 3rd grader? For 4th? Thanks! Lisa
abbeyej
I require additional writing through the week in terms of history narrations, answering science questions, Bible story narrations, sometimes writing about literature we're reading... I think WWE is great as a gentle beginning writing program -- but it doesn't substitute for writing "across the curriculum", especially as one goes into the fourth grade. I think writing across the curriculum is wonderful. Unfortunately, I always feel like I need a structured program. I don't feel confident adding in my own stuff. Maybe I will have to rethink this. She does use CLE LA and does a fair amount of writing answering questions and such, but I've been thinking I need to add something more for 4th. I do have Writing Tales and I could add that in, but part of the problem I've always had is overdoing things, so I thought 2 writing programs would be too much. Mom-ninja.
My 4th grader does WWE 3, narrations for history, and for science narration, definitions, and experiment sheets. I also just bought Sentence Composing. oh, he also still does copy work for cursive practice. I use Elemental Science which has the writing assignments already planned out. For history we use SOTW and printed out narration pages for each section. I put them in a binder. That way I remember to have him do history narrations. SOTW AG has comprehension questions that can help you lead the child in narrations.

All you have to do is narrations and dictation from your science or history readings! I wouldn't do WT and WWE. If you want to move to WT that would be fine, but it covers narrations and copywork so you don't need both (and it still would be nice to be doing narrations and dictation from hist and sci ;), even if you are doing WT). Yes, I suppose you are right. I guess the one truly enjoyable part of our homeschool day is our SL reading and I don't want to turn it into a chore with narrations and dictations. Does anyone know what SWB's recs are for how many narrations/dictations should be done a week outside of WWE? In WWE 3, my daughter is narrating twice a week and I'm dictating to her 3 times a week. Honestly, I would think that would be enough for 3rd grade at least, especially considering she is already doing copywork on a daily basis and answering questions in her CLE LA book 3 times a week. She also writes an occasional letter or thank you note, but that is it. On the other hand, I wasn't feeling confident about how much she should be doing, so that's why I asked. How many times do you do narration/dictation in a week? Thanks so much! Lisa Edited January 12, 2011 by LisaTheresa

Maybe I will break down and do some history narrations here and there, I'm just afraid of turning our SL reading into a chore. Right now it is the best time of our day. truebluexf
You are doing about what she recommends for that age just with WWE. I finally listened to her audio lecture on elementary writing, and it is amazing. Answered all my questions and more!!! If you wanted to add more, you might just consider one narration from history or another subject per week, but iirc she recommends, in her lecture, 3 narrations and dictations a week. It would be nice, however, to start showing how it applies to other subjects. We are only doing WWE2 this year with my 3rd grader, so I'm going to try to up it a little and add in an extra narration and copywork from our other work. We do most of our reading curled up in my bed at night, so I understand not wanting to make it a chore. I think I will just choose one reading a week to do earlier in the day and have him narrate from it. I took a copywork selection from Charlotte's Web today for each child to practice with, even though we read it last night. You could always add another dictation like that, too, if you wanted. But I can't recommend her lecture enough!!!
