MFW ECC...is the religious stuff interwoven?

It at least appears to me that one could do the program without all the missionary stuff...am I right? I don't mind some bible study but prefer something towards the secular side, easy to tweak, and not missionary. Is it possible with this?

Yes, but you'd eliminating a LOT if you just whittle it down to geography only. The science is biblically integrated, too, as one of the main books for science is from Answers in Genesis.

Maybe if you used Book Basket extensively.... There are a number of secular (no biblical info) books listed for each country in Book Basket.

Yes the older version did use Wild Places which is an Usborne title. Now, I didn't use it long enough to really say but I got the impression that you could leave out the missionary stuff and still have a nice year of World Geography.

Thanks. I need to get my hands on a copy locally to peruse through. We do our own bible study. Has anyone else used the older version? It just appeared more secular in the science department. Are the geography books that religious?? I was thinking if I got the older version used it might work. It just looked fun with the game and all LOL. I'm debating between this and SOTW. I just thought a year of geography might be fun first.

Here are the books that I don't feel are religious.....

A trip around the World

Another Trip Around the World

Kingfisher Illustrated World Atlas

Geography from A to Z

Maps and Globes

Usborne Living World Encyclopedia

Wee Sing Around the World

World Geography

Classroom atlas

Hero Tales, Gods speaks Numanggang, Windows on the World, and Properties of Ecosystems are all Christian material. I don't know. It looks like the majority of this is secular. Maybe I'm wrong but I wonder if this program could be used in that fashion with some modifications. I'd try to find an older guide and see if you could make it work.

I have the older edition here, and yes, I think it would not be hard to eliminate much of the Biblical portions, but for the cost of the program, I think you'd be better off going with a different program where you don't have to filter it as much. The program is definitely missions-focused. It would definitely be worth it to get your hands on the older edition and look at it yourself. Or maybe use something like Galloping the Globe, where you pick and choose more yourself?

I'm not sure because I didn't use much of the guide. Like I said we rabbit trailed and then never went back to the MFW manual. I no longer have it, so I can't look in it and see how religious it is. I have galloping the globe as well and I think tweaking MFW would be easier than doing everything on your own with it. Did you look at the samples on the site? Maybe that would give you an idea. If you can find an older guide at a good price, you might find it worth it to give it a shot. It looks like most of the missionary books are in the Deluxe package and I think that's optional.

Do you think it would work if I just got my hands on an older guide, then bought the books I want? It seems like it would be a heck of a lot cheaper than WP was (in fact, even brand new, it's about half the cost...)

If you didn't have to spend tons for the 1st edition manual, it might be fine for just geography and science. Use book basket to help flesh it out for science. And if it is light on science, re-read the intro section for how to add reports and things like that.

Much of the geography in ECC is neutral and not religious based. You'll find notes in the first edition manual for the original edition of Living World Enc. to have evolutionary heads up content.

Then, yes, you could skip all Bible content in the Bible grid, and ignore the read aloud deluxe of missionary biographies. In place of the biographies of missionaries, you'll want to look through book basket for appropriate read aloud chapter books to do instead. I can think of one example such as Ali and Golden Eagle; or if you have younger children, books like Little Pear can be nice for read aloud/reader.

ps. I"ve used first edition twice, and also own 2nd edition. ECC is the one year that might be able to be done less religiously than any other year in the program if you only want to do Geography/Science. Again, it's a question if the price is right for your wishes.
