catherine smith
What ages would you recommend Christine Miller's "The Story of the Ancient World? as independent reading? I have a 7 year old who's forte is reading.

Eeek! You could copy and paste some of the samples into word, and it has a feature that tells reading level. Can't remember how it works anymore, sorry! Generally I hear the Guerber books referred to as middle school, probably in part because of the older language. I think they would work fine for a little younger kids. CW uses Guerber in several of their models geared to 4th and 5th grade. With a 7yo I would probably be hesitant, unless they are just a serious history lover. Even then I would be ready to step in and read them aloud if needed. Heather
Another Lynn
I read SAW aloud last year, and I'm not sure that my then-6yo and 8yo comprehended as much as I would have liked. The same year, my then-5th grader read Story of the Greeks and Story of the Romans alone without problem. This is just anecdotal, not definitive, but hope it helps. HLDoll
I read Story of the Greeks aloud to my 5 year old son and he LOVED it. I'd have him summarize for me at the end of each short chapter and I was impressed with what he did remember at that age.
