sthompson
Hi, my 6yo son and I are on lesson 51 doing the pronoun search. He did really well retelling me the story of 'The Bundle of Sticks'. Now in the search for the pronouns we have hit a wall. I typed the list of pronouns and the first paragraph on the computer to help him. He seems completely lost. I am wondering what you have done to work through this lesson? A paragraph at a time (I was thinking a day but we would be at it forever:glare:)? Should I help him out by showing him the words? Do it sentence by sentence? Any advice would be great. Thanks, Stephanie
prairiewindmomma
When I went through FLL with my oldest at that same age, we also stalled out on pronouns. Getting the audio and singing the songs has really helped with memorization!
KrissiK
I wouldn't worry too much about comprehension at that age. I think a lot of it is exposure and memorization. My boys are in FLL2 and understand nouns and verbs, but still... pronouns are a little tricky to "get". But that's ok. We'll just continue on and they will get it, I am sure. There is so much more important grammar for them to learn at that age - proper sentence structure, usage, capitalization, punctuation, etc. I'm not terribly worried about the parts of speech in the early grammar stage. Cindyz
If it were me I'd probably go back and review the last few lessons. Does he repeat the pronouns with you three times when you are working on them? Has he done the copywork where he writes the pronouns? We're on lesson 60 and my son was able to grasp it, but we follow the lessons to the the T...meaning I make him repeat them with me, he writes them as copywork, we made up sentences where we used the proper names and then substituted the pronouns, etc.
mom31257
I haven't used FLL, but when my ds was struggling with understanding pronouns, I tried telling a story without any pronouns, then retell the story with pronouns. I had to do this a few times, but it really helped him understand their purpose and identify them much better.
Jyniffrec
I agree with some of the other posters. Think of it as a survey this time around. I am having my six year old learn the list (slowly) but I don't expect complete understanding.

Did everything they suggested. I was thinking along the way that it didn't seem like much (compared to the nouns) and that we were moving kind of fast. If we are going to cover it more later then exposure is the main thing I will worry about for now. Thanks so much for the responses! I'm feeling better about it:001_smile:. mom2koh
We just did this one today. I had dd6 copy the pronoun lists onto one sheet of paper as we went over the lists. She used this as her reference. I noticed at the start of the story she was constantly looking at her list. I would read one sentece at a time and she would yell "Stop!" if there was a pronoun in the sentence. By the end of the story She was able to tell me to stop without looking at the list. I truly think looking at the list so much helped her. Good luck!

I am having my six year old learn the list (slowly) but I don't expect complete understanding. I use CLE LA and pronouns weren't introduced until 2nd grade, so I don't know if age is a factor, but it was when my ds did understand pronouns that he could identify them without even memorizing list yet. Maybe helping them understand will also help them if they forget something on the list. I wouldn't give up on the understanding it.
