Hunter's Moon
I don't mind Apologia, but I was looking for something cheaper. I found this and was thinking of using it, but I also need a lab component. I can buy the dissection kit and microscope and such and just make up my own labs, I suppose, but I was wondering if there was a cheaper option than Apologia w/a lab component. Thanks. Hunter's Moon
I did just find this. Anyone used/heard of this? It would save us about $50. I'd just buy the lab stuff separate and plan the lab component over the summer.
8filltheheart
my dd is using this anatomy book http://www.amazon.com/Essentials-Anatomy-Physiology-Valerie-Scanlon/dp/0803610076/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1294435717&sr=1-2 along with this student workbook which includes tests http://www.amazon.com/Students-Workbook-Essentials-Anatomy-Physiology/dp/0803610084/ref=pd_sim_b_1 and this coloring book http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Coloring-Book-Wynn-Kapit/dp/0805350861/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1294435882&sr=1-1 as well as these lectures (which you might be able to get through your library) http://www.teach12.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=160 She has also done several dissections, but I would do one whole dissection like a fetal pig over several organs if I had to choose just one. Also, the coloring bk would be the first thing I would eliminate if $$ was a factor. The workbook really compliments the text.

I did fetal pig last year, and planned on just getting a cow eye and sheep's heart separately (those are 2 of the 3 dissections in Apologia), but getting the fetal pig would make more sense. Thanks! ETA: Does she seem to have any trouble with it? Is it straight forward and to the point? Science is not my strength. Also, I'm assuming the answers are at the back of the workbook? 8filltheheart
No problems. And yes, all the answers are included in the workbook. It has been an excellent course.

Hunter's Moon
No problems. And yes, all the answers are included in the workbook. It has been an excellent course. One more question. Would you recommend NOT buying the microscope and slides. That would save us a big bulk of the money there to use on different subjects. I suppose I could get a book with pictures of the slides and between that and dissection it could be called a lab? Does your daughter just dissect for the labs component? Thanks. 8filltheheart
I would not buy a microscope and slides. You can google most slide images on the net. I would spend the money on the TC lectures instead. My dd has dissected several organs and will be doing the fetal pig in a couple of weeks. While the organs have been interesting, again if money is an issue, I would watch virtual dissections online and spend the money on the TC lectures. But to answer your original question, yes, she only dissects for her labs.

This is a fourth ed. Do you highly recommend the 4th ed over the 5th or the 6th ed? I do realize that the 4th ed you can get for pennies. Just wondering. We are currently using Apologia A&P and son do not like the book. He said it is too much mumo jumbo and not enought pictures or cut and dry explainations. My oldest ds took A&P his sr yr with an AP bio teacher and these are the books he used. (fwiw....that means he took the course 4 yrs ago. It is current enough to meet my standards. ;))

I was going to have dd use the Apologia next year, but this look good too. It covers some things I was going to to have to add into the Apologia and I can spread it out over a year.
