8filltheheart
This is the sentence given, and I am not sure.... The men often have a speech. A speech is often given by the men. One of the most obvious way to spot a passive sentence is when the object of a prep is actually the doer of the action and the subject is what actually received the action. For example: The chef baked a cake. vs. A cake was baked by the chef.
burleygirl
The sentence sounds awkward. I am not sure how to interpret it. Passive sentence - "A decision was made to cancel the parade." Active - "The committee made the decision to cancel the parade." A speech was had (or given) by the men often. Edited January 5, 2011 by burleygirl Correct passive & active
Leola
Thank you! Thank you! This one is very awkward. A speech is (often) had by the men. Awkward, but correct. This is what ds came up with, but it sounds so strange. I guess we will just go with it.
