The Hangman's Daughter was free when I got it but it's only $3.99 now. The torture scenes were hard to take but since the executioner doesn't enjoy his work it made it easier to read. The book is basically a historical whodunit.

I also recently discovered Henry Rider Haggard. His writing is very old fashioned and hard to get used to but once you get going his books are quite good. I recently enjoyed Montezuma's Daughter and The People of the Mist.

I really enjoyed most of the Thomas Hardy books. Tess of D'urbervilles was my least favorite, but if you like Jane Austen these are pretty good. I also enjoyed many of Edith Wharton's books. If you download all those, then look at the recommended for you part, they pull up a lot of authors I'd never heard of but enjoyed trying.
