Capt_Uhura
A friend and I are looking at bunsen burners, specifically at the ones listed in the Flinn Scientific catalogue that is referenced in ACS Middle School Chemistry. What do you use? And what is artificial gas? http://www.flinnsci.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=14016 Capt_Uhura

Mom22ns
We use this alcohol burner from HST
Capt_Uhura
I looked at the ones at HST. I was wondering how those are for sterilizing agar plates. From my lab days, we would hold the bunsen burner in our hand at an angle, and the agar plate in the other hand upside down at an angle for a quick sterilization. I didn't know if that would work well w/ burners w/ a liquid fuel attached to the bottom as opposed to gas going through a line allowing the burner to be moved around? SailorMom
That alcohol one is the one we use as well. Works great!

The burner gets hot and is supposed to stay level (to assure no fuel spillage). I don't see the need to tip the bunsen burner though, you can just hold you petri dish upside down over the flame if you need to sterilize. However, having spent much time in the microbiology lab in college, I must say I have never disinfected an agar plate. You should be using sterile agar to start with :001_huh:. Capt_Uhura
yes the agar was sterile but perhaps it was just the habit of the prof who taught me. ALthough this was the south so it's quite hot and humid. You'd get lots of condensation on plates and it was just habit to give them a swipe w/ the flame.
