First day of no meat, no processed sugars, no...

foods that I have been enjoying regularly. Dh and I are trying to get our nutritional health on a better track.

Can I just say plain almonds are no where near as good as chocolate covered?

I did not think our "normal" diet was that bad. But, looking back over the last couple months of fudge, white flour delights (cookies, breads, cakes), and just too much food, I can see it was not as good as I thought. Dh said he already misses coffee after 1 day. I gave up coffee months ago, but I do miss my hot chocolate.

We are going meat (and dairy) free, sugar free (except for what occurs naturally in uncooked fruit), and processed food free. Tonight, I feel run over, I'm so tired and achy!! We are not starving ourselves. I made multi-bean soup and brown rice for dinner. We had raw veggies and hummus for lunch and oatmeal with nuts for breakfast. So, I'm trying to get complete proteins. I made my own peanut butter too for snacks with apples or unleavened flat crackers.

How long does the transition time last and when will we feel good? Thanks!!!

Well, we're not going meat or dairy free, but we're on South Beach, which is completely carb free for the first 2 weeks. I'm on day 3 and it's not that bad, although I must say that I felt pretty pathetic for considering Zycam a good dessert. Aside from wanting carbs, I feel great.

for lent we eat totally vegan & give up all sugar, caffeine, processed food, leavened bread, etc. so i feel your pain! it took about 6-7 days before i really felt good. the first week i was much hungrier than normal & had a splitting headache (from not weaning off the caffeine first). we'll do the same thing again this year. it is so true that you have no idea how much junk you consume until you really take it all of out of your diet. i promise, you are going to feel SO much better & wonder why you didn't do it sooner. hang in there!!!!! relief is on the way!:D

I'm going through much the same thing this week. :glare:

It can take a week or two to detox to the point where you start feeling better. Until then, watch out. I even have mood swings that make PMS look like a walk in the park.

Oh, and you can relax a bit about the complete protein thing. It's a myth (It does help add a little variety in the diet, but don't sweat it too much.).

I'm impressed you do it every year. While I know giving up sugar would be a great thing, I can't imagine doing it! I'm pathetic like that. :tongue_smilie: I'm curious though. If you feel so much better eating that way, why don't you do it year round? Do the foods just kind of find their way back into your diet over time, or do you take them all back after Lent? I'd love to feel great. I wish I had more willpower. :001_huh:

My church does a 21 day fast every January. This year I am considering the Daniel fast (no meat. sugar, processed foods, dairy, etc...) basically veggies, fruit and water. This is VERY intimidating to me. I downloaded a cookbook, but the amount of work is scary!!! (no mayo, or sauces or salad dressings WOW!!!) If its any help. I'll probably be in the trenches with you starting next Monday!!

i'm not sure why we go back to our old ways. we normally eat somewhat healthy, drink a lot of water kefir, and i don't indulge on sweets, etc. i guess (for me) it's really just a 40 day sacrifice and not intended to be a lifestyle change. i wish i had the conviction to always be that disciplined...i'm just not there yet:blush: maybe one day though.

These foods sound delicious. I'm not kidding - these are my ideal foods. :D I hope you feel better soon.

Drink a lot of water to help your body go through the transition. Hot water or herbal teas is ok.

You will probably feel better in a few days, but the cravings may last longer, and you may get more symptoms on and off- but overall you will feel better. But if you give in to the cravings, they will make you feel bad again. One thing that happens is that you get more sensitive to the effect on your body of what you eat, and the short term pleasure of taste no longer becomes as important as the long term effect of how it feels in your body after you eat something unhealthy.

I am doing a no meat, no dairy thing at the moment too (I already did no sugar or processed foods). I am finding I am very achey- all my joints ache. I am hoping it passes soon, too!

I did a cleanse this summer. No animal products, sugar, processed food, caffeine or alcohol (my easiest thing to avoid!). The first 4 days were rough - caffeine and sugar withdrawal. I was very tired so I just slept whenever I could. I really started feeling great though and once I got used to it I did very well. Going to a restaurant was no fun but we saved money. You are lucky DH is working with you - I was all alone in my quest. My husband loves coffee and processed meats! It's awful!
