plain jane
I found this book to be really helpful for seeing where my children should be as well as ways to improve my homeschooling. The "What your ___th Grader Should Know..." books are also another good resource.

Crimson Wife
Are they in 5th & 3rd? To me, by the end of 3rd grade, a student without any LD's should be reading fluently and be just about done with phonics instruction (if not already through it). He/she should be able to write a basic 3-4 sentence paragraph with a topic sentence and some supporting details. He/she should be able to identify the subject & predicate in a sentence and the basic parts of speech. He/she should also know the basic capitalization and punctuation rules. In math, he/she should have mastered addition & subtraction, the multiplication tables, and short division. To me, by the end of 5th grade, a student without any LD's should be able to outline a passage after reading it. He/she should also be reading & comprehending chapter books along the lines of Beverly Cleary's "Ramona" series, Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" series, etc. He/she should be able to write a decent 5 paragraph essay. He/she should be able to diagram a sentence with some complex elements (prepositional phrases, gerunds, etc.) In math, he/she should have mastered multi-digit multiplication, long division, addition & subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators, and addition & subtraction of decimals. I would adjust the expectations accordingly for a gifted/advanced child and for one who has a LD.
elise1mds
I roughly go by these: http://sde.state.ok.us/curriculum/PASS/default.html. I don't really use their social studies requirements, though, since I'm following SOTW.
