AuntieM
Okay, so we don't skip Christmas, but we have started recognizing this day. We refuse to make any outside engagements, and spend this day with family. We will end the evening with Chinese dinner and an annual viewing of A Chritmas Story. I am about to buzz out for some last minute shopping, and then i'll play in the kitchen all afternoon. Later on the 5yo will wrestle the head of the household to the ground. We'll skip the airing of grievances. What have y'all got planned for the day?

kewb
Don't forget the feats of strength. Most important-you need to set up your festivus pole. http://www.festivuspoles.com/pages/Festivuspoles.htm For those who have not heard of festivus: Edited December 23, 2010 by kewb

thescrappyhomeschooler
As an interreligious couple who is friends with other interreligious couples, we have a festivus party during the season at some point. This year it will be on New Year's Day. We also celebrate my goddaughter's Dec. 26th birthday at our festivus party. We don't air any grievances, just have fun and laugh and open some presents and eat.
AuntieM
Ah, the Feats of Strength! That will likely be represented by my teen sons hauling up the extra dining chairs from the basement! And surely that Seinfeld episode must be on netflix streaming by now? Now that the kids are older, I think we'll see about adding that to the evening's program! Mejane
Festivus... for the rest of us. :D
Lady Florida.
In the tinsel thread I said I find tinsel distracting. If anyone "got" that, they didn't mention it. Maybe I'm too new and they thought I was serious. :D Ah, The Airing of the Grievances, The Feats of Strength, and Festivus miracles. What a day! Truscifi
If you find the Seinfeld episode on Netflix, please post which one it is here. I would like to watch it. I feel so left out not knowing about Festivus. :tongue_smilie:

thescrappyhomeschooler
FYI: George's father was sick of the commercialism of Christmas and created his own holiday- Festivus. The episode was hilarious. He started by everybody telling each other what they did wrong during the year, and then they did the feats of strength, which I think involved trying to wrestle him to the ground. There was also a plain pole in there somewhere. We just love having a Festivus party because the idea was so funny.

AuntieM
It is the tenth episode of season 9 (episode 166). Sadly, it is not available on netflix streaming. :glare:
Annie G
Ah, but do any of you erect a pole? (I could so with a healthy airing of grievances. ;)) My daughter took a long cardboard tube from wrapping paper and covered it with aluminum foil. My son couldn't get it to stand up because the granddaughters were running through the house....so he went and got a plunger and mounted the Festivus pole on the plunger. And then we all Elaine danced.
