Printing MM

I just sent them to Kinko's/fed-ex...though I don't think it was the cheapest, but it was easy (this is after I printed them at home and printed front to back all wrong - page 1 was with page 20...duh!)

 I have the worst luck with back to front printing!

I tried emailing a file but I think it must have been too big for my email program. Maybe I need to call some places and see if I can bring something in on a CD.

huh. This is interesting to me because, while I have not done a thorough analysis of this, I cannot imagine it costing more to print at home. Let me give it a go, here:

Printer cartridge cost $30

Advertised number of pages printed by cartridge- 1200

To be conservative, cut estimated pages printed in half - 600

Price per page to print - $30/600 = $.05 (probably at most)

Price of paper - I get paper cheap, in bulk, at Staples for $30/5000 = $.006

So, unless I can find copies for less than 5 cents, which I know I can't in my town, I am better off printing in draft mode (MAKE SURE EVERYTHING YOU ARE PRINTING PRINTS IN DRAFT MODE) at home.

HTH:)

I printed all of MM1A after my ink cartridges had already signaled "low ink", and they got through all of it no problem. I used fast draft mode and printed manual double sided (it prints the first half, then you turn it around and it prints the other sides).

MM looks fine in fast draft mode. The "color" involved is mostly outlining blocks and such. It's not a vibrant color that uses a lot of ink.

A laser printer is the cheapest route, of course, but even if you have an ink jet, printing MM isn't that awful if you're doing fast draft. It's certainly cheaper than having it printed at an office supply store.

I'm contemplating homeschool for next year for both my kiddos. I pulled my pre-k son out this winter, and have been working with him. This is a question I'm contemplating too because many of the curriculums I want to use can be ordered as PDFs. I just printed out MEP at home, and it was quite the chore. I looked around the net and found this place:

https://www.bestvaluecopy.com/

For 434 black and white pages that are 3 hole drilled it was 12 bucks, but of course you have to pay an additional 12 bucks for shipping. You can opt for nicer paper for a little more, have it bound if various ways, etc. I still can't decide what is cheaper, but the convenience would certainly be nice :)

DH got me a laser printer for Christmas :D. So, it sounds like it'd be easier/cheaper to print the MM on that than on our old inkjet (which I plan to keep around until it dies)? The printer is still in the box - guess I have to wait till Saturday to set it up. And I still have to purchase MM - I was hoping for a holiday coupon code but I guess not.

Would anyone like to comment on whether it is easier to view MM as single sided or double sided, both for doing a lesson and for your child to write on to answer problems? It just occurred to me that the binder rings would get in the way (dd is left-handed) - do you usually just remove the page from the binder for writing on? Sorry to sound dense - I'm just preparing myself for dd's excuses for not wanting to do work :tongue_smilie:

My dd is also left handed. She takes everything out of her binder to work on it.

LOVE Best Value Copy. I would get my printing done there if I wasn't going to do it myself for some reason. Even with shipping they were extremely competitive in pricing compared to any other online or local option we looked into when printing out MEP reception year but we also used their first time customer discount which made it ridiculously cheap in comparison to other places.

I am really thankful for the home printing tips and other ppl doing the math on that for me since we're going to be using MM and/or MEP and I was hoping I hadn't misjudged the printing expense. :D

Debbie- thanks for doing the math on that. I'll look and see how many sheets we get per ink cartridge. It sure doesn't seem like 600 though.

Now I remember that printing was one of the reasons I decided against MM a long time ago. :glare: Also, my dislike for loose paper. As mentioned above, my dd will have to take the pages out of her binder to write on them.

We have 2-sided and that works out fine. I remove the pages from binder (even though son is right-handed) - easier to do that way.

We buy our laser printers when they are under $100 with rebates. I saw one listed yesterday on slickdeals.

My husband gets paper printed on one side from the recycle bin at work. They are happy to have us take it. We print MM on the other side so our paper is free, totally free. My kids haven't minded the print on the reverse side at all. Every now and then we get free paper on rebates and use it when I must have nothing on the reverse side. But primarily we use paper from his recycle bin now.

Here are costs per page I calculated recently on 2 of our laser printers. You have to know toner cost and drum cost to get a complete total (not including paper):

pages toner cost cost per pg drum pgs ttl cost per page

1500 52 0.034667 samsung 146.4 24000 0.0061 0.040767

2500 63 0.0252 brother 116 12000 0.009667 0.034867

Just yesterday I realized my dd had finished the last chapter of MM4B and still didn't really understand decimals fully. I quickly printed that chapter and did it with her again. Since it was her 2nd time through, she and I whipped through it. But it really got the concept into her head and was worth the time and the reprinting. I LOVE that about MM. I can print any pages I want any time and review with her. And the best part is, she loves MM too! And she is "seeing" it in a way she never did with MUS or R&S or anything else we have used except RS, which I found too time consuming for me as the teacher since I have 4 kids. If I had one child, I'd use RS and MM I think. But, I digress!

Lasers also eliminate trips to the store for printer cartridges bc/ the ink lasts so much longer!

Note - my prices are for the brand name drums and toners. Now we can replace the whole printer for the same cost as a new drum. So I decided it was worth a try using no name toner and drums. That has worked great this round and was like 1/4 the price.

It turns out our inkjet prints for 7.5 cents a page. I guess I'll pay the few extra cents per page to have Kinkos do the job. The office supply stores around here all cost 9-10 cents per page.

Suddenly I'm not so pleased about choosing this as our supplement. I could have bought a workbook from B&N for less money. :glare:

I'll have to consider the laser printer purchase. The way appliances are breaking around here it could be a while.

If you print in Fastdraft mode it uses MUCH less ink, therefore decreasing the price considerably (at least that's been my experience). I never print in normal mode.

I want to address your double sided vs single sided. I'm not sure this is the most cost effective, but I print one sided. There isn't a lot of room for working problems out (especially when you get to the higher levels (3-6) so my kids use the back of the paper to work out their problems. I figure then they are not using yet another paper for scratch work. That's just me though... I think in the earlier books it would be fine back to back. I print less on a page anyway for my 2 younger guys. There's just not enough room for the young ones to write.

We have a laser so I print at home as I need things. I use file folders not binders so I don't have the extra step of punching. I also use draft mode and because our laser isn't color hardly ever print in color. If something needs color I usually just trace over with a marker. Or, when my ds6 did a money unit I did print those in color on our ink jet so he could tell the coins apart easier. Otherwise it's all b&w here.

Oh and as far as the price... this has been the first math curriculum I think is the best all-around. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
