carlyincali
Hello, Besides math, I haven't decided what type of curric. I am going to use w/my girls next year. They are 11 & 9yo, going into 6th & 4th grade. I also have two toddlers and am expecting our 5yo dd to come home soon from Guatemala. I know that I will be very busy with her for a long time. A few people have suggested SOS for this year because it is independent learning. I don't know much about it, only that it is on the computer. I am going to look into it. But I would love to hear any opinions on the curric. if you are using/have used it. TIA
LadyAberlin
I would go read the reviews of it on homeschoolreviews.com. It gets really bad reviews.
Mandamom
because it was either that or send my child to school (he still went to school anyway for other reasons the very next year). What I liked about it: My prep time dropped significantly (I had gone from a TWTM eclectic style where I put everything together manually rather than buying curricula to SOS; Using a flashdrive he could take his school work to his mom's house if he needed to easily; he did learn material that he still talks about today; I didn't have to plan very much; it took me out of the education process which was something we needed at the time (complicated situation). he didn't need to wait for me to start his day. What I didn't like about it: I thought it covered the basics rather than the complete homeschool education I wanted to provide. There were some errors in it but not nearly as many as I read about on other websites. My (step)son didn't take the time to actually learn everything that was there because he didn't care about his grades. I still needed to supplement some but I'm not sure if that was because of him or the program. I was in a very unique situation and given those exact circumstances I would use it again but if I was more interested in K12 as an option and would have tried that if I could. SOS did not mess my son up at all. The next year he went to the local middle school and did well and the following year moved in with his mom and is now attending a local private school and doing really well. He's an honor roll student and cares alot about his grades and his success. I guess I give it a C because if you interact with your child and do it together you can turn it into something better than it is by itself. But then, there are better framework programs out there. Plus sitting in front of a computer can be boring and I was surprised at how much non-computerized time that needed to occur to have success in the program. We used the 8th grade full 5 subject program.
