Nearly a third of American families qualify as low-income

Low-income is different than poverty level. However, at 200% of the poverty level, our budget would have room for the things that many people take for granted. Not only that, but regardless which number you use, the family makeup makes a difference. A family of 5 with one-income who lives on $51K (200%) is way better off than a family of 5 with two-incomes that has to pay for childcare. (My dh's pay once I get a job will pay for daycare and nothing more.)

I liked the statistic at the end - unemployment for those with a college degree peaked at 4% - much less than the total %. Wages have dropped in many areas for many jobs, while other industries have been fairly steady.

ETA: I don't expect this will change much in the future.
