Besides Liping Ma's book....

Recommended Posts

Simpler than Liping Ma, the A Handbook for Mathematics teacher in Primary Schools is good. It lays out the Singapore bar method as well.

More intense is Elementary Mathematics for Teachers by Parker and Baldridge. This is actually used as a textbook to teacher Singapore math teachers and they recommend you have the Elementary Singapore texts on hand to both do workout of and for reference.

Sorry both are focused on Singapore, but the ideas could be applied elsewhere.

Someone recently recommended Math Coach on these forums somewhere. I borrowed it from the library and thinks it's fantastic. I'm planning to purchase it. It gives tips for teaching math -- anything from counting, basic math facts, story problems, algebra. It's written for a parent whose child is in the public school system and does spend time discussing school policies, etc. But it has some really practical and helpful info.
