Hedgehog
Buy second hand (preferably from someone you know); we've picked up some decent skates for our dc via our skating teacher and hockey coach at the rink. Failing that, buy a good make new. You get what you pay for. You will probably be able to sell them on afterwards, so you're not actually spending all that money. Decent makes of figure skates: Riedell, John Wilson, MK, Belati, Harlicks Ditto hockey skates: Bauer, CCM, Nike, Graf, Mission, Easton. HTH! ETA: Also check that the brand you pick are suitable for your child's foot width - for example, Belati's tend to come up wide.
