What is a tincture of iodine?

And how do I get it? Needed for Real Science for Kids Chemistry. I've been stalling on this because I wasn't sure what to get. I would hate to get a whole bottle of betadine only to find out it wasn't what was called for.

You have to get it from the pharmacy. They sell it behind the counter now because I guess druggies use it to make something. At least that is how it is here in FL.

It is in the first aid section of the pharmacy. I don't think it's the same thing as Betadine - my bottle just says "tincture of iodine."

 

If you are buying it to use as an indicator for starch, which is how we used it for science, be aware that there is a "decolorized" version which will not work for that purpose.

I got it at Walgreen's Pharm. Think of the most old fashioned pharm near you, and call.

Oh, okay. Thanks all. Betadine was the only thing I could find in the first aid section. I will ask the pharmacy. Mrs. Mungo, very interesting link but there is no way I could go through that!
