A home for their hearts
I think we might give sonlight a try however I dont like the 2 spines they use. Would the read alouds and reads be enough or should we get a spine as well? If so what would be a good spine for my dd11 and ds10?
Mosaicmind
What two spines are you referring to? There is only one spine for Core 3---The Landmark History book.

The story of the U.S.A is recommended if you think The Landmark History book is above you dc comprehension.
Mosaicmind
Really? I have been using SL for 13yrs and never heard that. The Story of the USA books are more of a supplement to the history----they are used as a comprehension of the history being taught. The Landmark book is the only spine for the Core 3. I don't know what you would use if you don't use that and no I don't think you can do the Core by only doing the readers and read alouds. I don't know if using the History of US books that would be used in Core 100 would work or maybe the All American History texts.

This is what SL says on their website: "Partially because his material is unfamiliar, but partially because he writes in a more mature fashion than most younger children are used to, we supplement Boorstin's book (and, if need be, encourage you to replace it for the first half of the year) with The Story of the USA books." Mosaicmind
I will say that the Landmark book is a little dry at the beginning but once you get into it I think you will be surprised.
ga girl
We have used the History of US that SL uses for core 100. We love it!!
walkermamaof4
Beautiful Feet's Early American Primary set has been the most wonderful addition to our use of SL core 3. Love their book choices!
Violet Crown
We are using the Golden Book History of the United States as a spine for SL3; I make up my own assessment pages for it (keeping about a volume ahead of dd).
