Felicia
Hello, It has been awhile since I've been here and everything has changed. I am needing help with my history selection. I have 4 children but are most concerned with my 12 dd and 10 ds. We have tried sotw and can't really get going with it. We have started and stopped and we have a good grasp on ancient Egypt but not much else. I have thought about TruthQuest and am wondering if anyone else has used it or has a rough plan to help me get them through all the history they will need by the time they go to college. This is beginning to be one of those situations that I am getting stuck on so badly that we are doing nothing much at all. Please, I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thank you, Felicia:tongue_smilie:
Deanna in TN
We have completed Mystery of History I and II and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We started when my son was in 5th grade. I love her discussion for each lesson. She also has pretests, exercises, quizzes, activities, etc., and she suggests the child narrate or write important points on notecards. We have also loved reading historical fiction books that go along with the subject matter. I have the Truthquest Age of Revolution I and it looks interesting. However, she just suggests some writing topics to go along with the extensive list of other books she recommends. I need a curriculum that has more of the work done for me, but I don't like textbook type curriculum for history. If you have any more questions, let me know. ELaurie
Hi Felicia :) When you say you are getting "stuck" with SOTW - what happens?
momto3
I continue to plug Sonlight. We were in the same boat three years ago (although my kidos were still pretty young), we just couldn't get going on history. Then we found Sonlight and have not turned back. If your children enjoy reading, they will really like Sonlight. The work is already done for you in scheduling the books and it also gives you summaries and questions to ask about the books to ensure they are getting it. Even though they are not in the same grade you should be able to lump them together for their history with SL. I enjoy the books as much as they do so it gets done. momto3
Adding on the the last post, I forgot to mention that SL uses SOTW for their World History Core 6 and 7, I believe. This would be great for you because it would be all scheduled out but still be a little familiar. Best wishes!
Felicia
Thank you all so much. I really appreciate your input. ELaurie, I get stuck in the activity pages I believe. We can get through the book but then I think I might be overplanning and then not getting all the things needed for the activities. Then we just stop because I don't want to move on until they get to do something. So now they've missed so much because we just didn't move on. Maybe if we just read and listen to the cd's and throw in an occasional activity then we can get through it. I just needed a push in the right direction. Thanks. :)

Thank you, Felicia:tongue_smilie: Felicia, It depends on your needs. What about SOTW didn't work for you? Is it just not your style of writing? Lack of schedule? Do you want more variety of books? TQ is a history outline. Michelle provides a some commentary on most the points, then lists a variety of texts you can use to read about that point. Where appropriate, her commentary is from a Christian perspective. It also has some writing, but not a lot (at least in the younger levels, which only have 2-4 writing assignments for the whole book). There is no set schedule, you decide your own pace, and you have to be able to choose books. I once counted up the American Revolution section and between the events and the people she has over 300 books listed. You have to be able to choose and come up with your own schedule. If you want timeline or mapping you will have to come up with that on your own or with a stand alone geography program like the Trail Guides. If you need a schedule then I would say look at BiblioPlan, Sonlight or if you also want hands on My Father's World or Winter Promise. I used TQ for a while and really enjoyed it. I bought Guerber Story of the Thirteen Colonies and just read through the points where a chapter of Guerber was read. So daily we read one point on her outline and the corresponding Guerber chapter. If it wasn't in the Guerber text we skipped it on the outline (my kids are a bit younger). If I hadn't wanted more mapping and writing and have it be integrated then TQ would have been a great long term fit, but given I did want those things TOG ended up working better here.
